Baja California - Leaving next week...

(Updated April 21)
ENSENADA to Cabo San Lucas, leaving next week.

Looking for one or two hard-working coastal cruisers to join our tremendous adventure down the entire Pacific side of Baja California, beginning ASAP. At least two good stops at Turtle Bay and Mag Bay, and then the last longer stretch to Cabo San Lucas.

Requires a solid two-to-three week commitment, which could last up to two months if it works out well.

Part one of a three-part, at least two-to-three-year journey, this is still the first large segment, beginning at the Berkeley Marina, down the CA coast, and now the downwind glide down Baja. Ready to move again. This is my second run in the past few months, having been part of the Baja Ha-Ha, '25 back in November.

This overall voyage remains the same, continuing south and east down through the rest of Mexico’s Pacific coast, Central America, and eventually the Panama Canal, San Blas Islands, then Cartagena and Santa Marta, Colombia.

Future plans for the western Caribbean Islands, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Must be flexible. This is pleasure travel with no return trip in sight, at least for the boat, and there can be no strict set schedule to abide by. If you've voyaged much before, you know about setting exact dates. Wrap yourself around that, work well with us, and we'll have and learn a lot from one another.

We look forward to hearing from you! Best would be to connect with "mates" who enjoy the actual sailing, the beauty of exploring nature at anchorages along the way, and also taking in local flavor.

MOST DESIRABLE in a potential mate:
> Cooperative: a calm team player
> Strength and stamina: reasonably fit
> Prior offshore/coastal sailing experience
> Mechanical abilities a big plus

MOST UNDESIREABLE in a candidate as mate:
> Heavy drinker/drug addiction/cigarettes
> Lazy or financially insecure
> MAGA/Trump supporter

I'm the boatowner and founder of the trip, in which I have invested more than I ever imagined that I would (that's boating), but I do not view this as a typical captain/crew hierarchical scenario. Rather--being the California guy I am--I wish this to be our shared adventure based on consensus, with me making final calls only when necessary.

Everyone shall have a voice in our route planning and other daily decisions. We will rotate watches and share cooking and cleaning duties. We will share generally low expenses, split three ways.

Crew "family" can also reap passage-making experience, log nautical miles toward certifications, offshore navigation skills, and confidence building,

I speak, read, and write Spanish with near-native fluency, so you'll have a translator, and I'd be happy to help you better your language acquisition along the way.

Please contact us in a short message, including the following:
> Ocean sailing skills/experience
> Other abilities (mechanical, navigational, repair, culinary, etc.)
> Something about yourself as a high-integrity individual

These are a few prompts for fodder. They're just to get you started, and we are not asking you to give us answers to them all:

a) What do you most like and dislike
in other mates on a crew?
b) Why are you most enthused
about getting on this epic voyage?
c) What do you most hope to gain
from the entire experience?

All serious inquiries will be replied to.

Thanks for your interest. Forward ho!

("Profe") Steve

  • Boat descriptionOver two years of recent improvements in preparation for ocean voyaging: > Bottom paint, shaft/propeller cleanup, new depth transducer > Mast rehab, including gooseneck rehab, new spreader lights, all new shieves > New windex, Raymarine wind instrument, and multifunction cockpit display > ALL RIGGING AND LIFELINES replaced by Scott Easom, among the best riggers anywhere > Some new running rigging, all in pretty good shape, main halyard replaced > Power and electric... Two new batteries for the house bank, another dedicated to motor > Four 130W solar panels, controller, switches. Work on the DC power distribution and board. > Fabricated fuel tank to hold 30 rather than 20 gallons, electric fuel pump, thermostat, raw water impeller > Purchased 10 ft. Rover Marine inflatable, 1100 thrust electric. troller motor, lithium battery, solar panels > Standard Horizon VHF Radio with AIS receiver/alarms, VHF antenna, newish handheld > Hydrovane autopilot (emergency rudder) combined with tiller pilot for motoring > New 'top shelf' propane cockpit grill, heavy-duty fishing pole mounts, life ring > Complete workover of Universal A-1 Atomic Diesel Motor, all fuel line accessories replaced This could go on. There's a bunch more, but that's a lot of it, but also worthy of mention is that the hull is made of early generation fiberglass, when they didn't know how they would hold up, and is extra thick.
