JOIN THE ADVENTURE! San Diego through Mexico --and further...

Crew on part of an epic voyage to Central and South America

S//V Malolo, a Newport 33, left SF BAY cast off for Latin America on January 21st and recently landed in San Diego to make final preparations, including encountering a lucky third mate — hopefully by this weekend, (1/31-2/1). If you’re looking for an opportunity to adventure sail and are ready to go on short notice, that could be you. We’re headed down Baja—with a couple of stops—to Cabo San Lucas and then to some awesome anchorages on our way to La Paz.

Our journey will then continue through Southern Mexico, Central America, and Panama. Later, we’ll traverse the Canal, visit the magnificent San Blas Islands, and eventually find ourselves in the Colombian Caribbean Coast cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta. Further in the future (2027), there are already some general plans for Caribbean island hopping, rounding the corner of the continent, and swinging through Suriname and the Guyanas to arrive in northern Brazil. Next year's destination: Salvador, Bahía.

I’m “Profe” Steve, an early-retired Latin American Studies academic. I’ve undergone years of preparation in anticipation of completing the recent Baja Ha-Ha. In the end, I did do it this year, but more like a practice run on two other people’s sailboats when I lost my main mate at the last moment. My sailboat—nor my dreams—have not disappeared, however. Malolo had been deeply worked over in about every way and is solid. And now we’ve started on a repeat path, spending eight days winding our way down the California coast to San Diego, where we arrived yesterday, Wednesday the 28th. course. But we lost our third mate and are down one…

We are searching for a strong, easygoing crew member who can get to San Diego Harbor and leave almost immediately. And we’ll need one or two for each of the different legs of the trip, Basic skills expected, and “some” previous offshore cruising experience is preferred. While tolerant of and can adjust to most human differences, we are shying away from only the extremely unfit, heavy drinkers, or tobacco smokers.

Let’s have a fantastic time sailing afar together; a safe, positive, healthy, and sane one!

This isn’t just a crewing opportunity, but a collective adventure, including input on our itinerary and weighing in on important choices along the way. Shared food and fuel (motoring only when needed) costs, cooking, duties, watches, etc., but also taking in the sights, diving and fishing, fun port visits, and even language acquisition. Learn or improve your Spanish while sailing with me, as I am fluent and taught it for a long time.

Interested sailors, please contact us now (carpe diem!) with a personal message stating your level of experience, why you would want to join this adventure, and what kinds of skills, etc., that you could contribute to it. Then get ready to live a dream, and have the time of your life.

All inquiries will be considered and replied to.

Thanks for checking this out. Forward ho!
