Voyage of No Return Continues... UPDAtED 3/14

ENSENADA, Mexico, in mid-March.

Looking for one competent coastal cruiser to join me and another to cruise down the entire Pacific side of Baja California within a few days or a week.

Part one of three years journeying, this is the third leg of a Berkeley, CA to Santa Marta, Colombia journey. This opportunity could continue beyond our first destination of La Paz, Mexico for the right mate, depending on how things go between us all in getting there as a well-functioning team. Other upcoming short stops may include San Blas, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Huatulco; then on to Central America, the Canal, etc.

Must be flexible.

Best would be to connect with a mate who enjoys both sailing and the beauty of exploring nature at anchorages along the way, as well as taking in local flavor at a few key stops for food and fuel.

MOST DESIRABLE in a potential mate
> Cooperative: a calm team player
> Strength and stamina: reasonably fit
> Prior offshore/coastal sailing experience
> Mechanical abilities a big plus

UNDESIREABLE in a mate
> Heavy drinker/drug addiction/cigarettes
> Lazy or financially insecure
> MAGA/Trump supporter

I'm the boatowner and founder of the trip, but I do not view this as a typical captain/crew situation. It will be our shared adventure based on consensus, with me making final calls only when I find necessary, meaning that a consensus cannot be reached. Hopefully, we'll have a powerful triad that concurs!

Everyone shall have a voice in our route planning and other daily decisions. We will rotate watches and share cooking and cleaning duties. We will share generally low expenses, split three ways.

Crew members can also reap passage-making experience, log nautical miles toward certifications, and offshore navigation confidence building; all that while we're hopefully having the time of our lives.

We hope that everyone onboard will enjoy this sailquest together, as well as our stops — including a few populated areas, and plenty of outdoor activity: beachcombing, diving, fishing, etc., when we choose to.

I speak, read, and write Spanish with near-native fluency so you'll have a translator, and I'd be happy to help you better your language acuisition along the way. Being a former Latin American Studies scholar and educator, that'll be easy if you're willing to practice daily.

As with most sailing trips, there will not be any guaranteed dates of arrival; on the flip side, naturally, it will be good to keep things moving without too many unplanned interruptions--unless we all desire to detour or extend a bit...

When I was offered early retirement and left my teaching career, I swore off worry, hurry, and fury, so now I’m striving to abide by that. We should maintain what we choose to be a reasonable pace, but there shouldn't ever have to be any mad pushes to arrive anywhere by any certain day.

Please contact us in a short message, including:
> Ocean sailing skills/experience you have
> Other useful skills (mechanical, navigational, repair, culinary, etc.)
> A bit about yourself as an individual.
a) What do you like and dislike in a crew?
b) Why are you enthused about "landing" (punny) a place in this epic voyage?
c) What do you most hope get from it?

All serious inquiries will be replied to.

Thanks for your interest. Forward ho!

"Profe" Steve

  • Boat descriptionOver two years of recent improvements in preparation for ocean voyaging: > Bottom paint, shaft/propeller cleanup, new depth transducer > Mast rehab, including gooseneck rehab, new spreader lights, all new shieves > New windex, Raymarine wind instrument, and multifunction cockpit display > ALL RIGGING AND LIFELINES replaced by Scott Easom, among the best riggers anywhere > Some new running rigging, all in pretty good shape, main halyard replaced > Power and electric... Two new batteries for the house bank, another dedicated to motor > Four 130W solar panels, controller, switches. Work on the DC power distribution and board. > Fabricated fuel tank to hold 30 rather than 20 gallons, electric fuel pump, thermostat, raw water impeller > Purchased 10 ft. Rover Marine inflatable, 1100 thrust electric. troller motor, lithium battery, solar panels > Standard Horizon VHF Radio with AIS receiver/alarms, VHF antenna, newish handheld > Hydrovane autopilot (emergency rudder) combined with tiller pilot for motoring > New 'top shelf' propane cockpit grill, heavy-duty fishing pole mounts, life ring > Complete workover of Universal A-1 Atomic Diesel Motor, all fuel line accessories replaced This could go on. There's a bunch more, but that's a lot of it, but also worthy of mention is that the hull is made of early generation fiberglass, when they didn't know how they would hold up, and is extra thick.
