With over two decades of experience in the yachting industry and extensive operational leadership on sail and motor vessels up to 24m.
A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster, with YM Ocean qualification and 20+ years in the marine industry as a freelance captain, sailing instructor, project and programme manager on classic and modern sail and motor yachts. As well as yacht refit and new-build project management, alongside a background in mechanical engineering, I’m a confident communicator experienced in seasonal vessel management, coastal & offshore expeditions, yacht management, own boat tuition and sail training.
I adept at leading multidisciplinary teams in varied environments ranging from complex yacht build and refurbishment projects, experiential education voyages, offshore sailing expeditions to military funded marine surveys.
As well as many miles logged as a delivery skipper and instructor on monohulls, motor yachts and catamarans to 24m LOA, contract periods have included:
• Management and logistics of seasonal programmes on private and marine survey vessels, both traditional and modern rigs, working with HNW private and corporate clients, charity and academic staff, volunteers and UK military among others. Experience providing own-boat tuition as well as advisory services for refit, improvement and seasonal engineering programmes. I've had involvement in high profile regattas, corporate team-building, blue water and coastal expedition voyages, US military funded marine research projects, crew and budget management, crew training and own-boat tuition, vessel re-fit and maintenance schedules.
• Design and management of custom new-build sailing yachts, refit works and major refurbishment projects on classic and spirit of tradition yachts. Responsible for leading customer communication and relationships, supervising build/refit process, project time scale and critical path, management of multi-trade teams and third-party supply and commissioning contracts, as well as sea trials and handover.
• Leading the Nautical Science module of experiential College Programmes: teaching sailing, navigation and meteorology to university students on traditional, gaff schooner, and promoting leadership development within an at-sea learning environment. Responsible for vessel operation and safety, ongoing communication with students, staff and families, teaching practical and theory classes and providing on-going assessments.
• As well as vessel management my roles have incorporated strategy and business development, consultancy and advisory services, coaching and instruction, customer relationship management, website design and development.
