Firefighter-EMT Rescue Diver, never seasick — keen to learn, free now
Hi — I'm Dylan.
I want to learn to sail, and I'd rather learn by crossing an ocean than by reading about it. That's the honest pitch.
I've only sailed a handful of times. But I've spent my whole life on the water — grew up fishing and crabbing the Puget Sound, diving, surfing, kiteboarding — and I've been out in big water in the Pacific, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Hawaii and Indonesia. I have never once been seasick. I hold a boater's license, so the rules of the road, navigation lights and right of way aren't new to me — I just haven't done any of it under sail.
Before this I spent seven years as a firefighter-EMT in Washington State. A few things from that travel well onto a boat:
• Medical — real emergency training, and I don't panic when it counts.
• Ropes and knots — technical rescue was the job. Different application, same hands.
• Night watches — I've spent a lot of nights awake watching wildfires. 3am doesn't faze me.
• Rescue swimmer and SSI Rescue Diver — if something needs sorting under the hull, I'll go in.
• Mechanically inclined — I've rebuilt car engines and shaped surfboards, so I'm useful with fiberglass and happy to get greasy.
• Radio — I've used handheld and mobile radios daily for years and I'm comfortable on VHF. Clear, calm comms under pressure is second nature.
I'm a people person, fit and healthy, and genuinely comfortable being uncomfortable — bad sleep, cramped bunks, cold and wet. I'm nine months into a solo trip around the world and hoping to reach the Americas by sea instead of by plane. Learning to sail on a crash course across an ocean sounds like exactly the right way to do it.
I also shoot and edit video. If you'd like footage of your boat mid-ocean, it's yours — no charge, nothing posted without your say-so. If you'd rather I keep the camera stowed, that's fine too. The work comes first.
