Experienced ASA Instructor for Hire as Private Instructor, Deliveries, or Potential Experience Building Sea Time
Ahoy!
I'm Doug, a lifelong sailor and a sailing instructor located in La Ventana, a small windsports and diving mecca near La Baz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
I grew up sailing on Lasers and Sunfish in the Boy Scouts, where I obtained my Eagle Scout rank. As a teen, I nurtured my sloop handling skills on our family's 32 ft Catalina on the Chesapeake Bay. In 2013, I completed my ASA 101,103 and 105 certifications with Pentagon Sailing Club in Alexandria, VA. I then lived in Bocas del Toro, Panama for a year where I gained experience sailing cruising catamarans.
Since then, I spent many years living in the mountains of Colorado, but continued to sail regularly on the San Francisco Bay, especially when visiting my mother (a Naval Academy sailing instructor and ASA instructor) at her home in Sacramento.
During the pandemic, I got my Private Pilot's License, but decided I didn't want to continue onward towards my commercial rating and a life of flying school buses, so I took my BMW F800GS for a two week trip to Baja. I have been here ever since :)
I spent the summer of 2021 teaching sail racing on Lasers, and assisting in 101 and 103 courses on reservoirs and lakes in Colorado. At this time I was given a Macgregor 26s (not the hated "M"!), which I trailered all the way to California and down here to Baja behind a 33ft 2003 Thomas school bus I was converting at the time. I sold the bus to buy land here but still sail my Mac 26s regularly solo or with friends on the Sea of Cortez.
A year ago I passed my ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics for levels 201, 203, 204, 205, 206 and 214, and have since been teaching here out of La Paz. I've given over 160 certifications since becoming an ASA instructor, and have learned that I truly love the process of teaching sailing! I lead week long liveaboard sailing courses and spend half the month on the water from October until June. The effort, passion and experience I bring to each of my courses is shared with each of my students and is truly fulfilling.
In my non teaching season (June to October), I am available to help crew on deliveries or to be hired as a personal instructor for new boat owners to learn on their own vessel. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
I am responsible and knowledgeable, and would make a great addition to any crew. I only drink rarely (and never underway), don't smoke or use drugs, clean up after myself, and am skilled in the kitchen. I also love to freedive and spearfish and would be happy to supplement the diet at sea with some fish! I also enjoy wing foiling, surfing, kite surfing, paddleboarding, diving, and anything else water related!
I look forward to speaking with you! Thank you for your consideration!
