Skipper will pay for food on board (in consultation ) and all boat expenses. No drugs on board anytime. No alcohol when boat is at sea. I would rather non smokers.
A farmer and a seaman, an Irishman
John's boat circles Ireland - Spain - Portugal - Canary Islands - Ireland every year. He knows those seas well and the boat as well. He wishes to one day go further with his boat when the chance presents itself but also has responsibilities at home. I joined the voyage from Canary Islands back to Ireland after the boat had been sitting in the harbour during the lockdowns. John doesn't like harbour rot and we took a short time to prepare the boat with the necessary works and left for the Azores. Breakages en route didn't bother us and I would say John delights at sticking his head into the engine and figuring out a way to make it work even when there is nothing around us but blue sea. We had a coolant leak into the cylinder but we managed to get to the harbour of Horta. We had to stop in the Azores longer than planned for more permanent repairs but the Irish know how to enjoy themselves and the work on his boat never stops, there is always something to improve or fix. Ten days from the Azores to Ireland and the boat and crew kept going and enjoying it. The water pump on the engine failed but undeterred we temporarily fixed this problem as well with a shower drain pump. Time on our fixes ran out but we just managed to dock and a customary Irish welcome was awaiting. John is an experienced sailor, having raced on other boats and owned his own for a long time. He knows a lot of people and he gathered a competent crew for his voyage. People know to expect some order on his boat and without effort everyone did their part. The Irish like a pint, but John allows no drinking while at sea, lavish meals though are allowed and we had a very good cook on board. The dynamic on his boat includes a lot of joking: banter and sarcasm. I believe it cools off steam and works pretty well to keep 4 men in good mood against each other in a confined space. John expects certain things from his crew but will also explain his reasoning behind his requirements. Not afraid of breakages and preferring the sea to the harbour, he'll go out with reasonable but not always complete backups. He likes his vice grips and regularly finds unexpected use for things available in his toolbox.
