Captain - Temporary / Seasonal - Min exp 2 years - $10000 - United States

We have an exceptional racing boat, a retired formula 40 trimaran. The boat was designed for two handed ocean racing but was beautifully refit for cruising by the previous owner. We had loads of fun delivering this boat 1000nm slightly offshore up the atlantic coast in 2020. We have been cruising the new england coast on summer weekends ever since. When setup with a racing crew, 20kn+ are possible, and we regularly enjoy 12-15kn when just cruising. Unlike a normal race boat, however, there are loads of changes that make this trimaran more comfortable, safer, and easier to handle at the cost of a couple of knots. The boat has a significant racing pedigree and retired in the late 1990s.

The boat is currently on the hard in portland, maine (since december 2021) and job 1 is to get it launched!

I am the owner and primary operator but not a professional mariner. This is my second ocean-going sailboat in 7 years, with over a decade of competitive dinghy sailing and racing before that. My usual first mate is similar. We both have demanding tech jobs and are looking for: 1) a part time captain to help maintain the boat at the level she deserves, maximize the time we have to sail vs fix things, deal with annual haul out and launch, and captain the boat for long passages or deliveries. 2) experienced multihull racing sailors who we can learn from or race the boat with. 3) Local sailing enthusiasts of any experience who want to go sailing on a really fun boat.

The boat has a significant racing pedigree and retired in the late 1990s. We have a full gear compliment in good working order with a few caveats: Some of of the B&G Sailing instruments need calibration. There is no built in chart plotter, but there are ipad mounts that connect to the instruments, including radar, over wifi. The autopilot needs a new ram. We only have two spinlocks/harnesses that are trustworthy for risky conditions and then a handful of normal life jackets. Rigging is synthetic/dyneema and maintaining it requires specific ropework skills. The dinghy is not currently in working order. This boat is designed for sailing. A small outboard 2 two stroke motor can usefully help get on and off the dock or in or our of marinas in good conditions. This motor will not help you against significant currents or whether. The outboard is offset from the rudder, leading to an extremely wide turning radius (50+ yards). Installing a bow thruster or upgrading the motor would be excellent projects. Like most racing boats, there is no head onboard, but a beautiful bench to sit on on the transom. The boat is currently on the hard in Portland, Maine since December 2021. Job one is to get her launched!
