One open crew position - Bonaire->St. Martin and beyond

After retiring young from a successful career in IT, I purchased a Lagoon 400 catamaran in Curacao. Before I got her, she completed a sail from France, across the Atlantic, down the leeward and windwards islands of the Caribbean, before the previous owners were sadly forced to sell her. I have spent the last several months refreshing Fortunata for new adventures ahead. Recently I sailed her from Curacao to Bonaire, where we are now.

There is space for 1 unpaid crew member to join in a 3-4 night passage and the. sailing several of the gorgeous islands in the Caribbean. This is a pleasure cruise with no time or delivery constraints. Safety and a great weather window are the priorities to set sail. We will depart Bonaire by March 15, and then cross the Caribbean Sea to Saint Martin, where we’ll pick up some supplies, another crew member and enjoy the island anchorages along the southern coast for a few weeks. The itinerary from there will have us sailing east and south, visiting the leeward and windward islands down to Grenada, before turning west.

Duties onboard include all aspects of ocean passages including route planning, navigation, sharing watches, trimming/managing sails, taking turns cooking, anchoring, mooring, docking maneuvers, line handling, routine boat maintenance while underway, and most importantly, enjoying the journey. This is an excellent opportunity to gain new skills and hone those you already have. As Captain, I will cover all provisioning expenses onboard. You’ll simply have to get yourself to the boat. Expenses away from the boat, or land-based adventures, will be shared.

Sailing experience is preferred, but may not be absolutely necessary. Ideal traits and potential good fits - you have a strong work ethic, follow established procedures and instructions, you work well with others, maintain a calm head, have basic and/or advanced first aid skills. are positive-minded and a possess a good sense of humor.

The catamaran has 4 cabins, each with its own head/shower. Each crew member will have their own cabin.

  • Boat descriptionFortunata is a 40’ catamaran outfitted with RayMarine electronics and fully redundant autopilots. She boasts brand new Yanmar engines (~310 hours each), multiple sails for all conditions, a Plastimo Life raft, propane stove and oven and 4 cabins, each with its own head/shower. I purchased the boat in September, 2022, after she completed her most recent transatlantic trip from France to Curacao. She is a very capable, fast sailing boat, very light for her class and an absolute dream to helm.

Amazing experience in the ABCs with Paul!

5

I just finished a weeks-long trip with Paul on his beautiful catamaran where we sailed the ABC islands. This was my first catamaran experience and Paul was willing to go above and beyond to teach me everything from sailing techniques, to maintenance, to cooking a perfect pan-seared snapper for dinner. He was very patient with my questions, and I left feeling comfortable to sail a catamaran by day and by night. Every time I came up with something that I would like to do, Paul would put in extra effort to make it happen. An overnight sail, cliff-jumping, snorkeling, going up the mast, we did it all. Paul is very energetic, loves exploring new places and trying new things. He is very generous and kind, and we had many unexpected adventures on the water and on land. If you are interested in learning or improving your free-diving or scuba technique Paul is the captain for you. I achieved an extra 10 feet of depth within my first few days on the boat! As a female crewing alone, Paul made sure I felt safe and comfortable at all times, and I really appreciated the balance of fun, comradery, and having quiet time and personal space. There is plenty of room for relaxing on Paul's boat (which he keeps in immaculate condition), so choose one of 50 spots to read your book or enjoy the sunset. I will sail with Paul again any time and plan on doing so in the future. Thanks Paul!!

Incredible time with a great Bloke

Had an amazing few weeks in Bonaire with Paul on his beautiful Catamaran. Paul has mastered the skill of adventure and relaxation, as some days were spent free diving and sailing, whilst others were spent relaxing on the beaches. Paul was very considerate of my space and independence, and was always up for an activity. I learnt more from Paul in 3 weeks than I could’ve ever imagined going into this adventure and I’m sure anyone who joins Paul down the line, will too. Couldn’t recommend more highly I know I will remember Paul’s generosity and this trip for the rest of my life.
