Alaska to the Galapagos!
I spent 2025 cruising about 3000 nautical miles starting in the San Juan Islands of Washington and as far north as Glacier Bay NP before swinging out into the Gulf of Alaska for a few weeks and back through the inside passages of SE Alaska. I decided to winter on the boat in Alaska this year (which, if I’m honest, I’ve been questioning this life decision) and plan to start up again heading south in May. It’s about the journey, not the destination, for me, so I could see it taking 2 to 3 years to make it down to the Galapagos… after that it’s either through the canal or across the pacific!
Right now, I have friends planning to join me for most of this year through August. What’s still potentially open for crew right now is the first two weeks in May. During this time I want to head into Tracy Arm, to Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary and maybe to Tenakee Hot Springs. I especially need crew for Tracy Arm, it will be brutally cold in there in May and probably a LOT of ice bergs. Pick-up would be Juneau, drop-off would be Kake.
I’m also interested in meeting someone to join me longer term, so feel free to reach out if you think you might be interested in the future sometime.
Some notes about me and the boat:
I’ve been sailing for years and keep things safe, efficient, and pretty relaxed onboard. I can be direct: I like clarity, shared responsibility, and a clean, functional space, but I’m easy to live with if you’re self-aware, respectful, and comfortable with quiet stretches.
The boat is older, so things will inevitably break from time to time, however I’m very capable of fixing whatever comes up (I am a former professional engineer turned bike mechanic). The sails and running rigging are mostly new, I’ve redone almost all of the wiring in the last year, and I’m currently upgrading the electronics. I plan to replace the standing rigging at some point in the next year, mostly out of an abundance of caution before heading down the NW coast. All in all, she is a solid, reliable, coastal cruiser.
Food onboard is strictly vegetarian, so please be comfortable with that. Meals are usually simple, healthy, and shared. I try to supplement with foraged food also: PNW berries, seaweeds, and occasionally mushrooms.
It’s all about remote places, aligning with the weather, and a slow, rewarding pace.
