Captain - Permanent - Min exp 2 years - British Virgin Islands
S/V Cuan Law is seeking a full time Captain with a 200T commercially endorsed Captain’s license, current STCW’s, and Divemaster certification or higher. Other water sports experience, a background in hospitality, and a minimum of practical engineering/mechanical knowledge is desired.
Cuan Law is a 105’ custom trimaran offering week long liveaboard trips for up to 20 guests, all within the British Virgin Islands. We are a small, family-based company who have been in operation in the BVI for over 50 years. Cuan Law prides itself on top-notch customer service and many repeat guests, supported by a hard-working and close-knit crew.
Our full time crew consists of: Captain, Engineer, Chef, 2 Dive Instructors, and 2 Stewards/Stewardesses. Our family-based management team includes our Operational Manager, Crew Manager, Senior Engineer/Relief Captain, and Owner.
All crew live aboard year-round through both charter and non-charter weeks. During any non-charter weeks, all crew, including the Captain, are responsible for carrying out maintenance tasks and charter turnarounds. Maintenance periods include our Annual Maintenance, which typically runs from Aug 15 - Oct 15. Additionally, Cuan Law has a biannual haul out in the USVI. Our Captain must therefore have the appropriate permissions to enter and work in the US over this time.
Our contracts are one year minimum, but typical length of employment is 2 - 5 years.
This is a dynamic and rewarding position, Captaining the largest sailing trimaran in the world. It does, however, require a strong work ethic, a high level of professionalism, and excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
General responsibilities of the Captain include, but are not limited to:
- Running charters safely and effectively, creating varied itineraries that meet guests’ needs, while demonstrating positive leadership skills with the crew.
- Consistently prioritizing the care and safety of all parts of the ship through professional seafaring, overseeing regular maintenance, and providing support towards the engineering.
- Coordinating with the Operational Manager on any guest and/or shore-based matters.
- Coordinating with the Crew Manager on any crew related issues or domestic issues.
- Coordinating with the Senior Engineer, both on charter and during maintenance periods, regarding any mechanical issues, scheduled services, or required parts.
- Communicating with Management during any inclement weather that could affect the ship’s docking or anchorages.
- Being part of and effectively carrying out the system of shared crew responsibilities, both on charter and on maintenance, without issue or complaint.
Other desirable skills and attributes include:
- Willingness to work public holidays, weekends, and long hours.
- Familiarity with British Virgin Islands dive sites and anchorages.
- Strong attention to detail, including with record keeping/accounting, overseeing boat maintenance, and observing interpersonal dynamics.
- Ability to take direction from Management and work with an established crew.
- Familiarity with Apple’s Numbers app and the Apple iCloud platform.
- Clean criminal record, and remaining insurable as Captain.
