Watch: Middle of nowhere
Seeking an Adventurous First Mate: Sailing, Science & Systems (Whitsundays & North)
The Vessel & The Captain:
I am a former helicopter pilot and career mechanic ('Mr. Fix-It') living full-time aboard my well-equipped sailing catamaran. I run my boat with pride and like to keep it clean, highly functional, and mechanically sound. In May I should be cruising the Whitsundays with plans to head further North this season to Lizard Island and possibly beyond, and I am looking for a capable female First Mate to share the journey.
The Lifestyle:
This isn't a passive "passenger" role. I am looking for a partner in adventure who wants to be truly "hands-on." My lifestyle is a mix of preventative boat and personal maintenance and high-reward exploration. I am a keen cook and mentor; I enjoy teaching the technical side of sailing, reef ecology, and blue-water fishing to someone who is genuinely "switched on."
The Ideal Partner:
I am looking for a woman with life experience and "operational discipline." You don’t need to be a pro sailor, but you must have a practical mind and a respect for "the system."
Morning Person: We follow the sun and the tides (7:00 am starts are the norm).
Technical Interest: If you enjoy learning how a marine engine works or how to navigate a reef, we will get along famously.
The Vibe: I value someone who takes pride in their environment and their appearance—a clean boat is a happy boat.
Safety First: Competent swimmer, non-smoker, and a "can-do" attitude in the heat of the moment.
What We Share:
Authentic Experience: Remote reefs, snorkeling with turtles, and catching our own dinner (Nannygai is the house specialty).
Comfortable Living: You’ll have your own ensuite cabin on a modern, self-sufficient catamaran.
Intellectual Stimulation: I often host international students (marine biologists/travelers'), so the dinner conversation is never stagnant.
The Future:
While I often host short-term crew, I am open to a longer-term "Partner in Crime" if the chemistry and the "sea-legs" match. If you are looking for a high-standard, adventurous lifestyle rather than just a "holiday," let’s have a chat.
To Apply:
Please send a personal message. Skip the generic intro and tell me:
What is your "practical" background (technical, logistical, or outdoor)?
Why does a disciplined, live-aboard life appeal to you?
What is your go-to contribution to a shared dinner?
Cheers,
Mark

May 2022
I crewed with Mark for 2 weeks in May 2022. I highly regard Mark a competent and skilled skipper. His vessel is very safe, clean and highly maintained. Your well being and safety are of high priority. Mark communicates in a calm, clear, concise respectful manner. Daily work load are fair and reasonable. Mark is a genuine and generously spirited person, who enjoys sharing his knowledge and interests. Personally, my best crew experience to date. Highly recommend.
