Crew wanted from Bordeaux to Falmouth, UK

Crew member wanted from Bordeaux to UK commencing next week.
I’m looking for one or two crew members from 22 August until 7 September, departing from Bordeaux and heading back to the UK.

The boat

Diphda is a 34-foot wooden Hillyard ketch.

Travel costs to and from the boat are your own responsibility.

Everyone aboard is expected to take part in:

Cooking

Cleaning

Night watches

Food, fuel and marina costs are shared equally, usually averaging around €10–€20 per person per day.

I prefer anchoring whenever possible, partly because it is beautiful and partly because marinas have an alarming habit of taking large amounts of money in exchange for a small rectangle of water.

Sleeping arrangements

There is no private cabin
Otherwise, there are two berths in the saloon/galley.
Experience and qualifications

I genuinely don’t give a hoot what certificates you have, what brand of life jacket you own or how much your wet-weather gear cost.

Practical experience, common sense, humility and a willingness to learn matter far more to me than a laminated certificate.

I’m looking for someone who can listen, muck in, stay calm when things go wrong, take responsibility and work as part of a crew.

A sense of humour is paramount.

Safety and equipment

The boat is well maintained and has recently been dry-docked but it has its flaws as an old wooden boat.

She is fully comprehensively insured and equipped with:

AIS

Autopilot

Life jackets

Emergency flares

Liferaft

There are no electric winches, luxury gadgets or unnecessary mod cons.

There are, however, two toilets, a small but functioning galley, a spacious saloon and a shower, which by old wooden boat standards is practically decadence.

About the crew

I’m a 38-year-old female solo sailor and have lived on boats for around 22 years. I’ve sailed around the world on yachts and tall ships and worked in shipyards for around 20 years.

I took an eight-year sabbatical from sailing to become a mum, then rediscovered the addiction over the last few years.

Also aboard is a 55-year-old Welshman with a Day Skipper qualification, who joined me in the UK and has somehow survived the voyage so far.

I’m something of a musical gypsy, a highly strung harpist and salty sea dog with a dry, sarcastic sense of humour.

I’m pescatarian but have absolutely no problem with people eating or cooking meat onboard.

Who I’m looking for

Practical, easy-going people who are happy to muck in, take responsibility and understand that sailing is not always sunsets, dolphins and chilled white wine.

Sometimes it is wet socks, broken equipment, no wind, too much wind, mysterious noises at 3am and trying to cook dinner while every object in the galley simultaneously launches itself onto the floor.

Feel free to PM me if you're interested or have any questions ☺️⛵
