1st Mate - Permanent - €DOE - General (Europe)

Mate / Engineer

We're after a Mate/Engineer with real sailing ability and a genuine appetite for adventure to join us for an ocean crossing, a season in the Caribbean, and a passage home via the Azores. The yacht is a 27m sloop currently finishing up in the shipyard in Turkey, ready to head for the Atlantic at the end of November. From there it's a proper offshore crossing to the Caribbean at the end of January, a season exploring out there, then back across the pond to Europe via the Azores by next June, with much of the future itinerary still to be finalised, including onward passages toward Brazil. This is a long-term role for someone who wants real bluewater miles and a taste of some of the best sailing grounds on the planet, not a season filler.

This is a genuinely very active boat and ambitious itinerary — plenty of miles, plenty of hands-on days, and a crew that's properly involved rather than sat waiting for guests. The job is more informal compared to typical charter work, and you'll be living aboard full-time as part of a small, close crew rather than commuting to a job. Good sailing experience is wanted and Yachtmaster. You'll need confident, practical engineering skills too — main engine, generator, hydraulics, general troubleshooting — along with being comfortable handling small boats and tenders. Decent cooking ability is also necessary — meals are shared across a small crew, so being able to competently cook for the group matters. An open mind and willingness to keep learning is essential, and diving experience is an asset. Much of the future itinerary will be in places without a traditional large yacht presence, so self-motivation and being genuinely happy to get stuck in across all areas matters. Experience with mechanics, languages, fishing, or diving is all a bonus.

This could be a great opportunity for someone looking to step up from smaller boats onto something bigger, with real offshore miles to build a proper track record on. Preference for candidates with proven longevity in a role. Competitive salary, 30 days paid leave, with further unpaid leave negotiable.
