Sri Lanka to Meds via Red Sea, Feb 2020-Mar2020

Ahoy mates, my name is Matthias and I am the captain of SV Pelikaan.

I started my circumnavigation in August 2018 and made it to Indonesia where I currently am. I am searching crew to cross the Indian ocean from Sri Lanka to Djibouti. Pelikaan will leave in Sri Lanka around 20 Feb 2020. Then Pelikaan will spend some time in the red sea to progress later on to the meds. This leg will take 3 months. My goal is to finish up this circumnavigation in two years. So i want to be back in Belgium in early August 2020. Please only contact me only if you are truly interested in this leg. I am NOT crossing the atlantic, so do not contact me for that. Thank you.

I get a lot of requests, so make yours special.

I am searching for long time crew members (at least 4 weeks) who are willing to go on an adventure with me and who are willing to live cheaply and at anchor (we avoid marinas as this is costly). I want to live as closely to nature as possible, for that we almost never use the motor and sail as much as we can.

Experience is not required but a big drive to learn and being open to experience new things are highly valued. If you are adventurous and want to have the trip of your life, please contact me to get more information. We are in return very happy to learn as much as possible from you.

To understand what kind of voyage Pelikaan and our crew want to have, please watch the film 'Chasing Bubbles' on youtube. If you love this video as much as I do, contact me!

Alcohol is consumed regulary (beer, rum,..), in the end everyone wants to feel like a pirate. But drugs are strictly forbidden, crew will be checked before embarking. Frankly, you dont need this as the adventure and scenery is the best drug available. However, you dont need to worry about getting addicted to sailing, as this is healthy. ;)

If you made it this far, thanks.

  • Boat descriptionThe boat is a contest 35s built in 1990 and equiped with all the gear needed to go cruising offshore. I am the owner and the captain. The goal is to live off grid and to do everything on our own. All safety gear and sat phone are available. The boat consists of 3 berths (main space included) and can serve as a home for 4-6 people. The maximum crew will be limited to 4 people as this is more comfortable for everyone. I am open for individuals as well couples or teams up to 2 persons. Your task will consist of helping with the daily routine of managing a boat afloat (sailing, maintenance, cooking, keeping watch etc.) but ofcourse there is lots of time to discover land, read books, drink local beers, share awesome stories with other boats, getting familiar with the locals, catch fish and lobster, go snorkling and ofcourse enjoy the most beautiful sunsets all over the world. Hope this gives you a bit of a taste of what to expect on our boat. As a captain I only want positive spirited people that are as open as possible (lifestyle, gender- and culturewise,...). If we connect I could direct you to people that already crewed on Pelikaan so you can get a better understanding of how things are managed on our boat. The open positions are not paid, and crew is expected to contribute for their own expenses (food, gas, fuel). As we live as cheaply as possible (no marinas, bake bread, catch fish,...) these costs are very low and average around 5-10EUR a day. You dont need to pay a fixed fee per day, the made costs are diveded by the crew. All other costs (e.g. maintenance) are paid by the captain of the boat. :)
