1st Engineer - Temporary / Seasonal - Denmark
Hiya,
This is just a prospective ad to see if there's anyone out there who would be up for this trip. My partner and I are both skippers who trained on old wooden sailing vessels. We know our way around a sailing boat, but are not engineers. We are looking at buying a wooden MFV in Denmark (to be confirmed on the 15th of August), and if we buy it we will need to sail it back from Aalborg to North Devon at the end of August/start of September.
We both hold a Portuguese qualification to the level of assistant marine engineer, but because this is not a sailing vessel (she only has small stability sails), for safety we'd like to take someone onboard who knows their way around old marine diesel engines just in case of any hiccups along the way. The engine in question is a 3 cylinder, 165 HP Grenaa (a Danish make, supposed to be very reliable, their motto is 'difficult to damage, easy to repair). It's a pretty nice trip with a good amount of sea miles, so if you're someone looking to boost your mileage while working towards a qualification, this could be the trip for you.
This trip would be quite easy going, following the European coastline and trying not to push the boat too hard, probably crossing the channel from Le Havre. We are expecting to take 10 days, but it could be more or less depending on conditions. We are looking to take a few other hands as well to spread the watches. If you are comfortable standing watches, you could possibly have your own watch with a hand to assist you. Alternatively, if you prefer, you could crew as a 'day man' and basically just be on call in case your engine skills are needed. We will probably sort this out one the crew is assembled in Denmark.
The boat is not going to be super comfortable inside, since it's not done up as a yacht or anything of the sort. It has very basic accommodation. A stove, some berths, a heads. If you can't cope without modern comforts, turn away now. We are looking for someone who doesn't mind 'roughing it' a bit. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and foul weather gear. If you will need to travel from the UK, we might be able to consolidate luggage into one or two very large boxes to go in the hold.
All of this is hypothetical, based on whether or not we get this boat, but we are looking now to see if anyone is interested, since if we do buy it then we will be looking to set off at the end of August to try and catch the best of the weather.
