Atlantic Crossing: BVI to Europe via Azores - Departure soon!

Ready for an adventure? Looking to get out of the routine? Here's your chance! We're looking for additional crew to sail from the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to the Azores, and then on to mainland Europe.

Please find all details below. Contact us for any questions!

ROUTE
First leg: BVI to Azores. Then, depending on weather, either to Portugal and Spain and up the French coast, or directly across to England. After visiting England briefly, the boat will ultimately go to the Netherlands.

DATES
Test Sailing from Mid-June. Departure by end of June the latest, but of course depending on weather. Arrival at the Azores two to three weeks later. Will spend some time to explore the Azores, and then continue on to Europe by End of July. Arrival in Europe early August. If you can take two months off, you should be fine!

BOAT
Beneteau Oceanis 45, built in 2015. Some damage from Irma in 2017, but nothing serious.
Three spacious cabins, two heads with showers. New mast and rigging were installed in 2019.
Professional rig check carried out this week by the Wickams rigging company.
Boat has been completely overhauled over the past 6 weeks. It got a good-as-new Yanmar engine from a sister boat, as well as most of the interior furniture replaced. There is still some smaller unfinished bits on the inside, but overall the boat is clean, comfy, and well equipped.
Spacious galley with fridge and freezer, and three-burner-hob and oven.
Brand-new sails will be hoisted in a few days.
All new Raymarine electronics just installed.
4 solar panels for electricity, plus generator as backup.

SAFETY
New life raft just flown in from England, plus life jackets and flares.
EPIRB and satellite phone for emergency communications.
AIS alarm for proximity alerts.
Fuel for 1,000 miles of running under motor.
Handheld VHF

FUN
Two paddle boards
Fishing gear
Snorkeling equipment
Spear gun
Barbecue

CREW
Owner and captain Dave, 54, originally from England, living in Germany for the past 25+ years. Dave has been on and around sailing boats for as long as he can remember, starting to sail on his parent's boat early on. As an experienced captain, he's ready to take on this Atlantic crossing.
Deckhand Matthias, 37, from Germany. Matthias has previously crossed the Atlantic on a tall sailing ship, and sailed across the Caribbean from Martinique to Guatemala on a small yacht. However, he's not an experienced sailor (yet), but well aware of what he's signed up for.

GETTING HERE
If you come from the US, you can easily fly in via Puerto Rico, or take the ferry across from the US Virgin Islands. Flights from other destinations usually connect via Puerto Rico.
If you are fully vaccinated, you will need one PCR test up to 5 days prior to departure and another one upon arrival. You'll have to quarantine until the first test's results are in (24-36 hours), and then you're free! Quarantine should be possible on board.
If you're partially vaccinated, the same testing requirements apply, but quarantine is extended to 4 days.
If you're not vaccinated at all, quarantine is 8 days, with an additional test at the end.

We can help with organizing all necessary steps, as we've both done it before, and can also provide helpful contacts that will make life easier.

Feeling spontaneous? Here's the chance for that one story you'll be telling your grandchildren over and over :)

Get in contact, we'll usually respond within a couple of hours! If you don't hear from Dave on Crewbay, write to Matthias at matthias@fcfootstar.de.

See you soon!
