Simon from NZ: want to learn to sail from a Crew, Diver or Cook role
Hi everyone,
I'm launching myself into a new passion that will probably become an obsession... I hope to one day own and live on a sailboat on the Pacific, I'm taking my first steps by trying to link up on here with experienced sailors that are willing to share their knowledge. For now I'm just hoping to spend time on the water, preferably in a sailboat under 40 foot. As I learn I plan to do some weekend sailing of my own out from Marina del Rey, to the Channel islands and down the SoCal coast.
I currently live in West LA though I'm originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand. I'm easy going and friendly, so I get along with almost everyone provided they are respectful of others. I have lived and traveled all over the world so have a global perspective on most things, and can speak a little French and Italian.
In terms of what i can do: I'm a former professional cook so am good in the galley, a few years ago I started diving and am now a certified scuba diver (SSI Rescue/Master Diver). I'm fairly handy so can do a little electrical and mechanical maintenance, but more generally I'm a decent problem solver and fast learner. I'm not afraid of hard work or challenging conditions, and scuba diving taught me how to reduce risk through careful planning. At night I keep it pretty quiet these days: I enjoy board games, books and cards, I can play guitar and usually have a few stories to share if the mezcal bottle comes out.
I am married (no kids) so probably can't commit to any voyages longer than a month for now.
