Capable 1st Mate 15000nm offshore on monohull and cats. Solid technical, watch and deck skills
I am a dedicated, high-mileage crew member and Watch Leader with approximately 15,000 nautical miles of experience. My sailing background is forged in some of the most challenging and dynamic waters in the world—the South African coast. Having logged extensive passages between Port Elizabeth, Durban, and Cape Town, as well as hundreds of day trips instructing and running boats in Algoa Bay, I am deeply comfortable with heavy weather, complex tidal planning, and active vessel management.
For me, sailing isn't just about getting from A to B; it’s about execution, optimization, and stewardship of the vessel. I am highly proactive on deck, thrive in a team environment, and bring a calm, focused energy to any crew. Whether it’s a demanding coastal delivery, a multi-week ocean passage, or active racing, I aim to be the most reliable asset a skipper has on board.
Technical Troubleshooting & Repairs: I have a sharp eye for preventative maintenance and "problem-finding." I excel at monitoring systems—from cooling loops and strainers to electrical protection and deck hardware—and catching anomalies before they escalate into critical mechanical failures. If something goes wrong at sea, I am resourceful, handy with a toolkit, and focused on executing safe, logical repairs to keep the vessel self-sufficient.
Weather Routing & Passage Planning: My experience along the wild South African coastline has given me a deep respect for weather windows and routing. I am highly proficient in analyzing GRIB files, identifying synoptic patterns, and planning routes that prioritize vessel safety, crew comfort, and optimal speed.
Performance & Sail Trim: I genuinely love the art of making a boat move. I am an active trimmer who doesn't just "set and forget." I enjoy working the lines, balancing the helm, and tweaking the sail profile to match changing conditions, ensuring the yacht hits its performance potential while maintaining a safe, comfortable ride.
I bring a drama-free, professional attitude to the companionway. I am physically fit, non-smoking, tidy, and fully prepared to pull my weight—whether that means taking the grueling night watch, cooking a hot meal in a seaway, or diving into the engine bilge to solve a problem.
If you are looking for a capable right-hand who will treat your boat with the utmost respect and keep the crew safe and smiling, let’s chat.
