Motivated Novice Crew / Mile Builder – Oslo & Europe
I'm at the beginning of my sailing journey and looking for opportunities to gain real hands-on experience on sailing yachts, learn from experienced skippers and build miles.
I live in Oslo and am available most weekends for day trips or short passages, including an extra weekday when needed. For an interesting trip, delivery or training opportunity, I can usually make time for one or two weeks and am willing to travel elsewhere in Norway, Europe or the UK.
I'm currently studying for the Norwegian Båtførerprøven, but my main goal goes far beyond passing an exam. I want to become a genuinely competent sailor through practical experience: sail handling, manoeuvring, navigation, watchkeeping, mooring, passage planning, boat systems and all the small practical details that are learned only by spending time with experienced people on the water.
I don't yet have sailing experience, so I won't pretend otherwise. What I can offer is discipline, reliability and a strong willingness to learn. I listen carefully, follow the skipper's instructions and am happy to ask questions when appropriate. Night watches, lines, mooring, loading, cleaning, cooking and normal shared crew duties are all fine with me. I'm also interested in delivery trips and offshore passages as I gain experience, although I'm not looking for long ocean crossings just yet.
My professional background is in IT and telecommunications, and I also have practical experience with electronics, wiring, soldering and troubleshooting. I have some basic knowledge of marine electrical systems and issues such as galvanic corrosion. I'm not presenting myself as a marine engineer, but I'm technically minded and comfortable with tools and problem-solving.
I'm calm by nature and don't tend to panic when something unexpected happens. I get along easily with new people and take onboard discipline seriously. I'm a non-smoker and drink alcohol only very occasionally in everyday life. On board, I personally don't consider alcohol appropriate while the boat is underway or otherwise requires active monitoring.
I speak English at B2–C1 level, Norwegian around B1, and Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian fluently. I would be very happy to improve my Norwegian with a native speaker on board and, in particular, to learn the Norwegian sailing and maritime terminology used in real life.
I have a car in Oslo, so getting to boats around the Oslo area is easy. I can also help with practical transport when useful, for example bringing supplies, equipment or other items to the boat. I'm interested only in sailing yachts — from small boats where I can practise sail handling for a few hours to larger cruising yachts and deliveries.
My priority is learning and experience rather than simply getting a free trip. I'm open to sharing reasonable onboard expenses, and I can also consider paid mile-building or training opportunities depending on the boat, skipper, route and what I can learn from the passage.
If you're an experienced skipper who doesn't mind having an attentive and motivated beginner on board, I'd be very interested to hear from you.
