Future Mediterranean sailor looking to learn the ropes
Hi! I’m Dominik from Germany. When it comes to sailing, I’m still a complete beginner, - enthusiastic, curious and hopefully not completely useless.
My long-term goal is to explore the Mediterranean with my own small sailing boat, combining sailing with climbing and other outdoor adventures. Before attempting that, I want to learn properly from experienced sailors and gain real time at sea, rather than believing that a few YouTube videos will magically turn me into a captain.
I’m looking for opportunities to join weekend trips, short cruises or longer passages around Europe, ideally in the Mediterranean. I’m happy to join on my own, but for the right trip I might also like to share the experience with my girlfriend or my brother—although neither of them knows about their good fortune yet! Of course, this would only be an option if discussed and agreed with the skipper beforehand.
I’m fit, practical, used to DIY projects and comfortable with simple outdoor living. I don’t just want to be a passenger enjoying the view—I’m happy to help with cooking, cleaning, provisioning, maintenance, watches and anything else that needs doing. I listen carefully, respect the skipper’s decisions and genuinely want to become a useful member of the crew.
I’ve been climbing for more than 20 years and I’m also a climbing coach. If you enjoy climbing, I’d be happy to share my experience and help with technique, training or safety on the rock. This also means that I’m already quite comfortable with knots, although I’m sure sailing will introduce me to several new ones. In return for teaching me the ropes at sea, I can teach you the ropes on land!
German is my native language, I’m comfortable communicating in English, and I speak enough French to get by. I’m happy to contribute to shared food and running costs as agreed beforehand, and for the right opportunity I’d also be open to contributing a little extra.
