Looking for a Deckhand position
Hello,
I'm writing to ask whether you will be looking for crew for the 2027 season, and to get a few details before I apply.
I am French, currently a lawyer in the public sector, and I am retraining towards professional sailing. I have been sailing since 2024 with a French club affiliated to the FFVoile (equivalent of the RYA). Beyond the multi-day passages mentioned below, I also go out sailing regularly throughout the year to keep building my skills, and I have taken theory courses covering weather, currents and chart navigation.
My sailing highlights include an 11-day trip to the Channel Islands and a 20-day passage from Brest to Ireland. I also have hospitality experience: I worked for 3 seasons as a waitress in a restaurant in Dinard, France, including a season as head waitress, so I am very comfortable with customer service, hosting demanding guests and working as part of a team.
My long-term goal is to become a skipper in France, which requires a good level of English, and that is actually one of the reasons I am coming to Australia. I have visited Australia before as a tourist and loved it, so it feels like the ideal place to combine learning to sail professionally with improving my English at the same time.
A few questions before I apply:
- Are you currently taking on new crew for the 2027 season, and if so, from when?
- If I complete my STCW Basic Safety Training in France before I arrive, will it be recognised for working with you in Australia?
- What level of English do you require for new crew, given that I am still improving mine?
I will hold an Australian Working Holiday Visa. I would be very grateful for any information you can share, and I will apply through Crewbay once I know more.
Kind regards,
Ysatis Péan
