Looking for an adventure, new friendships and learning experience before buying my own boat.
I am a 50 year old woman who lived most of my life as a normal and boring housewife, nurse and mother that always had a nagging in the back of my head that there was more to life. I did not mean more money or more things. I craved quite the opposite. A simple life. A happy one. I divorced my husband of 18 years, retired as a nurse and met up with an old highschool friend. He lived in the San Juan Islands of Washington State on a 50 foot ferrocement sailboat. I went to visit him after not seeing him since highschool and I stayed 1 week. 3 months later, I packed what I could in my little sports car, shocked my friends and family and moved to Washington. This is where I found my inner Pirate Wench. I learned that I was so much stronger than I or anyone else thought I was. My friends back in Texas were taking bets on how quickly I would regain my senses and return. But, I fell in love with the way of life...simple, non-crowded, no traffic, quiet, nature...peace! It was better than I had ever imagined even though the boat we lived on had no mast, no sails and no motor. So, it was more like glorified camping than it was sailing. Unfortunately, I had to return to Texas to take care of some things. I do plan on buying my own boat before long, but thought this would be a great way to actually learn how to sail and experience some serious adventure first. I'm nervous because this would be another step into the unknown for me. But, I know that if I can get past my fear of the unknown and take that first step that I so desperately NEED to take, that it will be simply amazing.
**UPDATE** Last December my 19 year old daughter and I started our new adventure. We packed up and moved to Florida to find and buy our boat. We have settled in Key Largo on a trawler. However, my daughter has now decided she misses her friends and will be leaving soon and I've realized that although I've made steps in the right direction, my dream was to sail and travel. So, now I'm looking to crew(preferably locally) to gain experience in all things sailing.
