Experienced Captain/Skipper/Dive instructor looking for transatlantic and Caribbean opportunities this winter.
Hello! I have held a US 100 ton Master's certificate for 8 years. I will be completing my Yachtmaster Offshore in Tenerife by November 8th this year. I am hoping to join a transatlantic departing mid November.
I have approximately 8,000nm sailing experience. 2.5 years living aboard 2 of my own vessels in the Caribbean and roughly 1.5 years working on boats owned by others. I operated one of my boats as a liveaboard charter in the Virgin Islands where I taught teenagers how to sail during 5 day trips around the USVI. I worked as the Dive Instructor on a 22 meter ketch in the Bahamas for 6 months a few summers back, where I handled all the lines and much of the navigating while the Captain focused primarily on the logistics of running the business and engineering. Last winter, I was the Captain of an expedition sailing vessel in Indonesia and the Phillipines. Where I lead a novice crew though some of the most remote parts of Rajah Ampat while we obtained footage of the reef ecosystems for a YouTube channel and an eventual documentary. When not sailing, I've run numerous charter boats throughout South Florida and the Caribbean. Mostly dive operations and eco tourism, with a few of your typical fun day trips mixed in throughout my career. Currently, I am the lead Captain for a whale watching company in Juneau Alaska. Where I manage a crew of 23, including Captains, Naturalists and a maintenance team. Overseeing the operations of 5 vessels, with a combined fleet value of 7.5 million dollars.
After my Yachtmaster training this winter, I will have a few months of freetime before returning to work in Alaska. As I've never crossed an ocean, I would love to hear about opportunities for the passage to the Caribbean. However, I am open to all other opportunities during this time period espescially assistance with Panama Canal transits. Most importantly, I am looking to join a happy crew and have fun!
I can handle solo night watches and am confident making decisions about sail changes. I can operate well with a broken sleep schedule, so the long nights or multiple days with little sleep are not a problem for my attitude or performance. I am a pretty decent cook, and will never shy away from the galley and I'll eat anything you put in front of me. I am very easy to get along with and I follow instructions to a T. I am neat and tidy, espescially when aboard a boat underway. I understand the importance of this for the crews happiness, as well as safety. I have a complete understanding of all equipment used aboard a vessel, as well as hands on experience with all safety equipment. I require 0 training on the operation of most sailing vessels. However, I am always eager to learn from others and have none of the "know-it-all" attitude common among other experienced crew. I can perform most maintenance tasks, including light diesel servicing and electrical.
In an ideal world, a paid position would be preferred. However, I am really just looking to do some sailing and experience some different boats and people. So I am open to all opportunities, shared contributions or free rides.
I can provide references or a CV upon request.
Thanks for taking the time to read about me! Hoping to hear from you soon!
