What's over that horizon?
Hi I'm new to crewbay and relatively new to sailing. I'm currently stuck in landlocked Minnesota so the opportunities are somewhat limited. I've been going through the classes for ASA certifications and currently have my ASA 101, 103, 104 , 105 and 106 certifications. I've completed the coursework for the ASA 119 (Weather endorsement) certification. I'm waiting for my instructor to get her certification so that she can certify me. I'm currently working on the coursework for the ASA 107 (Celestial Navigation) certification. I will also be completing the ASA 114 (Catamaran) course in March down in the BVI. The book learning is great but I look at it as getting your learners permit.... You still have to learn how to become a driver and that only comes with experience.
I've had the opportunity to see a decent amount of the world but there is a great deal more to explore yet. This is why I've taken up sailing. I fully intend to spend at least several years being a vagabond(I was saying that long before I ever saw their youtube channel) and exploring the world.
I'm hoping to do a year or two of crewing to obtain that experience before buying a boat of my own and paying it forward by enabling people in my situation to obtain the experience to allow them to follow their dreams.
I'm 54, single with no kids. Financially, I'm just about ready to retire. I'm a non-smoker and light to moderate drinker. I'm partial to classic rock and blues. I'm a decent cook( I actually had my own line of Jamaican Jerk sauces for a number of years), and am reasonably handy with experience wiring, plumbing and doing light carpentry.
I am hoping to use sailing as a means to find out what's over that next horizon, even if it's just more horizon. I've had the opportunity to see a decent amount of the world but there is a great deal more to see.
Timing wise, I am hoping to start this journey in the late spring/early summer of 2020. Hopefully i can find a mutually beneficial arrangement with someone on here where I can give them a hand while I gain some practical experience and put some of the book learning I've done to good use.
