Love the sea, 60, looking to gain sailing / cruising experience before buying a yacht & sail the 7 seas

I love the sea and all the mysteries within it. Have spent endless days snorkeling, diving, and chasing all sorts of creatures in all sorts of waters. Have been all over the world on holiday, but have always flown to destinations with very few actual boat trips, the longest being crossing the English channel to Rotterdam & back!!
I am 60, 90% retired since the age of 48, financially solvent, fit, keen sportsman, fun loving, easy going, quick learner, can cook all sorts of meals, and have a Masters in IT & a PhD in engineering!!
I am looking to gain some decent sailing / cruising experience before I buy my own yacht and set off on my adventures, probably ending up island hopping in between Malaysia and Australia.
Happy to join in as a crew, fellow traveller, work for free in exchange for good experience or share costs on a shared voyage.
