Hi All!
My name is Derek! Originally from the Woodstock, New York area; spent a lot of time in the forests and mountains, along with traveling to some wild places; bit of time surfing and on the beaches. I've lived what seems several lives to where I am now. Most recently was a founder and CEO of a startup company, which consumed all of my time; the investors bought me out for a small sum when the pandemic hit, and I got involved in some small projects after. Currently looking to get back into all the adventuring I did in my late teens and really 20's, and live life again!
Planning to hike the pacific crest trail through to late summer/early fall; then would like to join a crew and sail down from California area, hitting some fun spots along the way, maybe Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica, and Panama; going through the canal and spending the winter in the carribean, ending up in key west by early spring! From there, I plan to sail up to North Carolina, then up to New York and up the Hudson, staying near my hometown of Woodstock for the summer! May end up getting my own boat in key west, see how it goes!
Looking to join up with a recreational, fun group or individual to cruise around to new places; surfing, snorkeling, diving, fishing, and enjoying each other's company along the way. Stopping off at different places to enjoy some of the local cuisine and culture, have a few beers at a local beach bar, maybe do some hiking and explore the area; before setting sail to another destination. Have some lifelong experiences and friendships!
About me:
I've been trailer sailing for a couple of years, in and around the North Carolina lakes, with a few sails in the inner coastal and coastal waters. Got into regattas a bit, to add some spice to the lake sailing; more looking for recreational sailing and cruising, and would also be okay with trimming the sails a bit and heading into the wind if there was a boat nearby that wanted to go for a quick test of skills, just for fun. As far as skills, I'm a quick study to most anything, good cook, know some basic medical and mechanical stuff and all-around pretty handy; would like to learn more about bluewater sailing; figure the best way to learn is by doing!. As far as expenses, I can contribute up to around $100/day.
Motivations & Plans
I've always sought a type of freedom in life, and find that sailing allows for that free type of lifestyle. I also enjoy the sport of sailing. Figured this is also a really great opportunity to learn a ton about all sorts of blue water cruising stuff, things about the ocean and sea creatures, different cultures, maybe get better at guitar, write a book and to meet cool people that we can build lifelong bonds from shared experiences. Kind of see all that life has to offer and the world is an oyster kinda thing!
