A skipper-certified sailor seeking hard work, and new seas as crew
Dear sailors,
I’m a 25 year old South African sailor (Green Card and German passport holder) who has recently completed a challenging sea crossing across the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden as a crew member on a 33’ Hartley Queenslander, which has fueled my enthusiasm for pursuing new adventures in the maritime world.
With my licensing to skipper keelboats of 30-45’ on multi-day cruises in inland or coastal waters (up to ASA 104: Bareboat Charter), I possess the necessary qualifications to handle various sailing scenarios. Growing up, I gained experience sailing a 25' MacGregor and a 31' Hunter sloop, and I have successfully completed several multi-day cruises on larger 37-45’ sloop rigs in Croatia and the San Juan Islands. Handling lines, sheets, sails, engine operation, detailing, coastal navigation, anchoring, tender operation, and health and safety come as easily as sharing a sundowner evening in the cockpit with the crew (if the winds permit).
With a Fine Arts Degree in Product Design focused on sustainability and nature-centered biomimicry, immersing myself in the outdoors is not only a compelling inspiration, but a natural desire. On board, a faulty mechanism or an impractical tool is welcomed by innovative design problem-solving. As a certified PADI scuba diver, I’ve explored the depths of the ocean, which has not only expanded my perspective above and below the horizon, but also influenced my design thinking, leading me to create a reliable dive console for divers in distress.
Photography runs in my blood. As a deeply ingrained passion, it enables me to capture those invaluable moments that transcend language. In the galley, I excel at improvisation with provisions, cooking delicious and comforting one-pot wonders, even in the face of tumultuous seas when spirits are in need of elevating. However, I am equally adaptable during resource-tight times, happily embracing simple meals like canned chickpeas.
Whether stationed in the galley, on the bow, up the mast, or at the helm, I have never been plagued by seasickness. As a national-level competitor in running and certified yoga teacher, I bring a disciplined and energetic approach to both land sports and the seafaring lifestyle. Tackling tasks, assuming various roles and taking on responsibilities are highly encouraged by my hardworking hands.
My Top 3 Values:
1. Innovation - When plans don’t follow through due to unexpected events, I’ve learned the value of instinctual innovation. I have a creatively oriented brain where innovation meets solution. When a bosun’s chair is unavailable on a remote island, a DIY bowline-tied harness is all one needs to get the job done.
2. Thoroughness - Going the extra (nautical) mile can be the difference between a successful DIY bosun’s chair and a quick trip to the hospital. I am fastidious in all that I do, resulting in a task that is completed with the utmost care and attention. Whether that be boat detailing or devoting my attention to crew, I focus on the details, both big and small.
3. Curiosity - Despite my experience, there is no doubt I have a lot to learn. Sailing knowledge is about as immeasurable as the open blue waters. I openly encourage new information with the aim of refining my skills and contributing to a synchronous crew.
Top 2 Values I seek for in Crew:
1. Honest, clear and to-the-point communication - Feedback and full transparency will always be encouraged from my end
2. Optimistic wholesome crew culture - Where I come from, a term we like to use to define our strong sense of community is “ubuntu” which means “I am who I am, because of who we all are.” I am an avid advocator for infectious positivity and a foundational mutual understanding among everyone on board—balanced of course with the concentration required to sail with stylish responsibility.
Mainly, I look forward to creating genuine connections with people that appreciate the free-spirited—yet dedicated—lifestyle that sailing provides. We are on this earth to gain new experiences, view life through different lenses, solve problems, gain resiliency, and mainly… to sail. You know the feeling.
