Cheerful, nomadic guy looking for mile-building and adventures.

Hello!

I'm looking to crew with a competent experienced skipper anywhere in the UK, ideally Cornwall or Devon for shorter passages, but I'm also open to longer voyages anywhere in Europe with the right skipper and boat. Over the next few years, I'll be looking to join a crew for a transatlantic crossing (East to West) and will then make crewing a regular part of life whilst travelling and living in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia after taking early retirement in 2029.

I'm a cheerful, easy-going, nomadic bloke with a lifelong passion for sailing and marine conservation. I began sailing in my teens, club racing and the sea scouts and later worked on dive boats and science vessels in my 20s. I regularly sail my own 17ft micro-cruiser, where I live in Penzance on the rugged, Atlantic exposed coast of SW Cornwall, UK.

My most recent longer crewing experience was a 25-day passage in August 2023 aboard a 12m Dragonfly trimaran, sailing from Kefalonia to Sardinia via southern Italy, Sicily and several smaller islands.

Qualifications/Training include RYA Coastal Skipper, ICC, STCW95, VHF and PADI Rescue Diver with many hundred logged dives. I have my own offshore foul-weather gear, lifejacket, AIS/DSC RescueMe MOB1 beacon, and handheld DSC/GPS VHF.

I completely rebuilt and refitted my own 1970s, 17ft micro-cruiser including rigging, hull reinforcement and rebedding every fitting, so I'm confident with boat maintenance, repairs and outboard servicing/repair.

On board I bring a positive attitude, practical skills and good company. I play guitar, enjoy cooking, can fish (trolling, handline and shore casting), and I'm tidy, organised and very comfortable living in small spaces after years of living in vans and boats. I am acustomed to night watches and long passages and dealing with rough seas states. I can remain calm in stressful, tiring situations and enjoy the endurance and mental challenges sailing often brings.

I've been diving and snorkelling around the world since 2000. Marine science, oceanography and conservation have been lifelong passions since taking a Marine Sciences degree at Plymouth University in 2000. I've spent my life exploring some of the wildest coastlines in the search for some amazing marine wildlife encounters. My enthusiasm and passion for cetaeceans and coral reef conservation continues to a huge driving force. My goal is to visit the reefs of the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, eastern Indonesia, Philippines and Polynesia, while I'm still young enough to enjoy them and before they disappear. My dream crewing voyage would be from French Polynesia through Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Vanuatu to New Zealand.

I'm here for the adventure—the laughter, hard work and challenges alike. I know life at sea isn't all sunshine and cocktails, and I'm happy to pull my weight. I'm reliable, hardworking and experienced with night watches on both sailing and motor vessels during longer passages. I'm comfortable staying alert through the night and familiar with navigation systems, coll regs and reading weather systems. I remain calm in stressful situations and will follow orders precisely, especially when it comes to safety at sea.

I am keen to practice classic skills like celestial navigation and weather routing if you're happy to. I think each time at sea has taught me something new and put my skills to the test. I don't think we ever stop learning and I am the most grateful to skippers who share their wealth of experience and remain humble to the ever changing challenges that sailing brings to us.

Thanks for taking the time to read my profile. I hope to share an adventure with you soon.
