Returning sailor, diver and traveller up for real crewing adventure again!! UK, Europe, Asia, Pacific.
Hello fellow crewbayers!
I'm on my second wind and finding my sea legs again. After raising kids and being without a boat for 15 years..
Hoping to join any adventurous skippers with a similar passion for sailing and diving in the UK, Europe, SE Asia and the Pacific.
I sailed, dived, travelled and worked on different boats for some of my 20s in different parts of the world.
I'm a young 45, based in Penzance, Cornwall, UK and work freelance. I am in a good position now to escape our rainy rock for long term adventures on sunnier shores and seas. I've just returned to the UK after travelling the last 4 months in Egypt and then Mexico and Central America.
I'm looking for crewing positions on sailing yachts. Anything from recreational day and weekend sailing and racing in the UK, to longer passages around Europe, SE Asia and the Pacific to gain some nautical miles and offshore experience. I would love to crew for the right Skipper on longer ocean crossings and Pacific cruising eventually!
My sailing skills are definitely rusty after a 15 year break. I crewed for a friend in Bacalar, Mexico for a few days cruising in December. I still remember everything ok, but my sail trimming needs alot more practice after so long on land! I'm joining the local sailing club to race mirrors and eventually lasers this season. I'm hoping that will help shake the dust off the sails. My past marine tickets are still valid and my first aid skills are up to scratch due to my past extensive work experience in health care.
I can offer entertainment on board (guitar, good laughs, poker games, stories etc). I have also picked up some handy budget cooking skills over the years. Being used to rustling up tasty dishes from the weird and wonderful local foods and recipes you pick up when travelling. I can fish ok, if it is done responsibly in abundant waters and for the right size and species. I prefer to fish to eat, not for sport! Accustomed to most kinds (boat trolling, hand line, shore casting, casting bait nets etc).
I'm a rescue diver with over 20 years experience, although most of it is warm water diving (Egypt,
SE Asia, Pacific and Caribbean) Only a little in colder UK and NZ waters. I have had a lifelong passion for protecting marine ecosystems since University (BSc Environmental Science). I've always surfed and sea kayaked a bit (but never excelled). Therefore I'm respectful and very aware of the sea's ever changing moods and tempers. Especially spending much of my life in the fickle Cornish waters. I'm starting to sail Dinghys again with my local sailing club and hoping to find more local skippers for sailing around Devon and Cornwall.
I don't smoke, very rarely drink any more and enjoy staying fit and healthy.
Good communication skills are crucial at sea! I've gained some important skills in conflict management from many years working in the NHS and local authorities. I'm approachable, friendly and caring.. but I will stand up to big egos and bullies.
I'm here for the adventure (laughter, sweat, tears and all!) and have no false illusions about life at sea. I'm a tolerant, patient and determined person, who would be a solid asset to your crew. I'm hard working and reliable. Having done countless night shifts on busy wards and units over the last 15 years, I'm accustomed to being vigilant and staying alert during the night.
And finally my pie in the sky! My ultimate dream is to cruise and dive the islands of the coral triangle in SE Asia and surrounding Pacific Islands. If you are a skipper in this area and looking for crew (shared contributions/recreational sailing). I'm your man!
Happy sailing! ⛵️
