Deckhand/Delivery crew/Sailing Coach
I’m looking for a Sailing yacht but I would also be more than happy to work on Motor Yachts. It is my intention to be working as a deckhand or as delivery crew. I am willing to help clean and maintain the boat and I am able to stand watches and help to navigate. I can also help with provisioning and cooking when required.
Since leaving university, I had to start thinking about what I wanted to do next, I realised that I’m happy travelling to new places and learning a different set of skills, which made using the skills in sailing that I grew up with and turn them into a career.
I feel as if I’m able to do this because I have always been around boats my entire life, starting racing on dinghies competing in events across Ireland and the UK and more recently on keelboats like J24,1720 and various other inshore classses. I have >2500 nm cruising around Mediterranean on our family yacht and have experience doing multiple delivery trips mostly around Ireland and to the Hamble.
Immediately after dropping outs of my Finance course at university, i wanted to prove to myself and people around me that it was the right decision, i took a sailing job in China for 8 months. This involved a couple of bases and travelling to and from the coast into the centre closer to Beijing. Doing this as an 18 year old who hadn’t lived away from my family home in Ireland before it was a very big shock to the system and meant that i had to learn new skills and adapt to things changing quickly but it was one of the best experiences and decisions i have made to date, it opened my eyes to a career in sailing and the travel that is possible from it.
More recently I worked as a sailing coach in the British Virgin Islands for the last two years, helping them rebuild and up the club again after Hurricane Irma. During I again learnt new skills as it was very hands on position where i would carry out almost all the repairs to the boats from Gelcoat work to Fibreglassing to engine repairs. Another thing was that i got to sail on catamarans, moving them around islands when required and got to race at different regattas.
