expert & easy-going sailor

5

I spent 24Jun - 3Jul2024 provisioning, sailing and post-sail clean-up and hanging out with Tim. We were on a 44 foot sailing yacht and went from Brisbane Marina in San Francisco, to Monterey with stops at South Beach Harbor Marina, Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, and back. Tim very quickly learned the boat, collaborated on a plan for provisioning and stowage, and was skilled at performing any task onboard. His superior sailing knowledge, gained from many years of sailing and boat ownership, was evident from the first day on the water and Tim made optimal recommendations in every situation. Tim could easily crew or captain a vessel, and during our sailing, he made effective recommendations to the skipper based on shared discussions as conditions changed or sail plans were modified. For example, Tim was a helpful backup to the skipper, as we returned to Brisbane Marina at night, using his sailing navigation apps to independently find buoys and the channel against background lighting. When the wind was light, or during slow moments, Tim regaled us with personal and sea stories and jokes that had us laughing. This kept morale high and helped the crew to bond. His amicable and friendly personality style focuses on relationships and getting to know the other sailors well. Tim is a highly competent sailor and a valuable addition to any vessel because he helps the team to bond over sailing and to perform better. His easy-going, diplomatic and collaborative leadership style fits very well with the various sailors on a boat. Any vessel would be well-served to have Tim onboard.

Tim is an awesome sailor

Tim is an awesome sailor. I recently (June, 2024) sailed up and down the coast of Northern California with Tim as a crew member on my 44 foot sailing yacht Papillon. Tim is a very, very competent and skilled sailor. He is very thoughtful and proactive in communicating recommendations for tactical decisions. Tim is very easy to get along with, has many entertaining stories and a litany of funny jokes. Tim is very eager to perform tasks underway for sailing or for meal preparation and clean up. Tim will make a fantastic addition to any sailing crew and I'm sure he is an excellent skipper.

Very Competent Skipper!

I served with Tim onboard the USS Florida as a naval officer. I’ve sailed with him up the coast of WA from Astoria OR to Blaine WA in 2022. We’ve sailed all around the San Juan and Canadian Gulf islands and also twice in the British Virgin Islands. Tim is an extremely competent skipper, he has owned several small and large sailboats and has been sailing most of his adult life. He is excellent at planning, ship handling and troubleshooting. He is a diver and strong swimmer, good cook! He is also a great guy, honest, works hard and a close personal friend.

Sailing the Southern Dodecanese islands in good winds

Tim and I were two of the crew who joined a skipper (a friend of a friend) for this holiday. It was my first week of sailing after doing a Competent Crew course and I felt very unsure of my abilities. The skipper was good enough but it was Tim who built my confidence, lifted my spirits and really 'showed me the ropes'. He was calm under pressure (when the boat slipped its moorings) and was even able to laugh about it later! I have come to regard Tim as a good friend and mentor and I would not hesitate to sail with him again if we find ourselves on the same continent.

Great Skipper

I sailed with Tim while moving, Mizu, his 36' Catalina, from Astoria, OR to Bellingham, WA during May 2022. His boat was immaculate and extremely well run. He briefed me on the boat's safety equipment during my first night on board before we left port and we ran a number of man overboard drills immediately after leaving port. He set up a watch rotation that kept two people in the cockpit at all times and he was diligent about checking wind, weather, and tides. Tim has a great sense of humor, he's very skilled at route planning, and he's a joy to be around. I highly recommend serving with him if you can.
