My background in mechanical engineering and own a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certification. In 2018 I've started in Shanghai a round the world attempt by bicycle and sailboat. After cycling 21'000km in 18 months I set sail in South Africa for a first ocean crossing. I have sailed over 22'000 nautical miles since, including in the real challenging waters of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Boat descriptionSV Spectrum was built in 1988 by the best regarded production boatbuilder in South Africa, John Robertson Yachts (later Robertson & Caine, now the 2nd largest catamaran builder in the world). This boat, along with the smaller L26 are the most popular official One Design Classes ever built in South Africa. It was refitted and prepared for high latitude cruising in 2022 and reached the Antarctic Peninsula in February 2023.

Competent and professional captain
I completed 1,200 nautical miles with Gilles aboard Spectrum from Nuku Hiva to Christmas Island, Kiribati. He is very experienced and always thinking of safety first. I enjoyed the experience and passage. Thank you.
