Looking for a Novice Crew, Voluntary work, Mile building or Deckhand position

Hi - I've just joined Crewbay. I'm interested in finding a position as a Novice Crew, Voluntary work, Mile building or Deckhand. I'm looking forward to meeting some new people! I went sailing for the first time last week on a friend's trimaran on the Potomac. Fascinating!

I was in the navy for four years as a seaman and quartermaster. Made a Unitas Cruise in 1981 and my ship, USS Plymouth Rock, went to Colombia, Netherlands Antilles, Barbados, five ports in Brazil, Montevideo, and two ports in Argentina. After entering the Strait of Magellan, we spent two days in Punta Arenas then proceeded to several other Chilean ports. Our last port of call in South America was Lima, where several of us flew to Cusco to then visit Machu Picchu.

Plymouth Rock had Omega radio-nav system but it never worked so we depended on dead reckoning, piloting, celestial navigation, radar, sonar, etc. Since, on clear days and nights we shot morning stars, morning sun line, LAN, afternoon sun line and evening stars, all the QMs got lots of experience in celestial navigation!

Also made a North Atlantic cruise, where we used Decca radio-nav system and it worked beautifully!

I have a Surface Warfare Pin, which I earned while serving aboard a minesweeper my last year in the navy.

I retired in 2017 after having worked at University of Virginia Medical Center as a Spanish interpreter for 12 years. Before that I was in construction and was an estate manager for seven years in Virginia. I am definitely not afraid to get my hands dirty!

I have lived in New York for seven years, one in Sunset Park, Brooklyn in 1970-1971 and the rest near Columbia University. In New York I worked in construction, word processing, where I used WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and dBase, and was assistant manager at French and Spanish Bookstore on 5th Avenue.

I lived in Spain off and on from 1973 - 1978 in Madrid and Barcelona. I taught English there and attended the University of Madrid, Complutense in 1974.

I am a graduate of University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a BA in Spanish.

I have been to China many times and, after my retirement studied Mandarin for an academic year at Taiwan National University.

I work out a lot and do my best to walk 10,000 steps a day. I love to study Chinese and Korean and lately have been reviewing my QM 3 & 2 as well as Dutton's, Bowditch, Chapman Piloting, and American Merchant Seaman's Manual.
