Puerto Vallarta Mexico to San Diego California in May – June 2023

Plan Sea is currently in Banderas Bay near Puerto Vallarta. I am looking for one more crew mate (due to a cancellation) to sail with me and one other from Puerto Vallarta to San Diego California via the offshore route commonly known as the “modified clipper route”. My preference is to sail a close reach offshore to go north to USA rather than to motor sail (or “Baja Bash”) up the coast of Baja.

This adventure is best for sailors who have at least a little bit of offshore sailing experience. Duration of the passage is expected to be approximately 3 weeks including preparations, and stops n Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada. Distance at sea is approximately 1,500 nautical miles. Some flexibility of timing can be important to allow for choosing a favorable weather window for each sailing segment.

Timing for this passage is best in mid-May or through June. Exact departure time will be influenced by favorable sailing weather forecast and crew availability. There is opportunity to enjoy some time while based on the boat around Puerto Vallarta (Bahia de Banderas), Punta de Mita, La Cruz, and Sayulita prior to leaving Mexico to begin the sailing passage.

Enthusiasm and love for ocean sailing are important. I enjoy being an easy-going mentor when it's helpful to crew. There is a lot for crew to learn about blue water sailing on this passage.
What else is important? lightheartedness, easy to get along with, positive attitude, enjoy working together with fellow crew, good sense of humor, like conversation, love the ocean, love boats, and love sailing. Plan Sea is a non-smoking vessel.

We share expenses for food provisions on equal basis among crew. I cover all expenses related to the boat such as fuel etc. Crew are responsible for travel to and from the boat locations at start and end of the journey.

It is important for crew to know their vulnerability to seasickness and how to successfully manage it during the initial days of the voyage until acclimatization to the ocean motion.

I've been sailing since childhood and have sailed over 12,000 nautical miles on the Pacific Ocean in the last four years. I never get seasick or sick of sailing. I'm fully vaccinated and boosted for Covid-19.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Kind regards,
Captain Kevin

Don’t pass up an opportunity to get aboard Plan Sea

5

I met Kevin on crewbay when he was looking for someone to crew aboard Plan Sea from Oregon up to Washington a few years ago. Since then I have joined him for 2 additional offshore passages, one of which we did double-handed. He is a competent and experienced sailor, and all around great guy to hang out with. His vessel is well kept and extremely seaworthy, you’d be hard pressed to sail aboard a better cruising boat in this size range. He has many interests and life experiences outside of sailing that make for great conversations, and really makes an effort to get to know you. The best part of it all: his quesadillas

Sailing on Plan Sea

5

I’ve been friends with Kevin for many years, working together in our engineering careers as well as mountain biking and back country skiing adventures. His disciplined, engineering approach to planning and problem solving makes for a positive safety net on all our outdoor adventures. I sailed with Kevin on Plan Sea in Washington’s Puget Sound and San Juan Islands during the summer of 2020, and on a passage from Portland Oregon to San Francisco in 2021. Sailing at that level was completely new to me prior to joining his crew. As captain of Plan Sea, Kevin knows how to bring novice and experienced sailors together to form a cohesive crew. He also provided sailing mentorship as needed for fun and safe sailing adventures. Plan Sea is a fun and seaworthy boat and Kevin is a very competent sailing captain who keeps Plan Sea in perfect condition. The passage from Portland to San Francisco was fast and a bit rough running along at 40 to 60 miles offshore. Nevertheless, we always felt safe, lived comfortably, and ate well. With Kevin’s strong engineering background, he understands Plan Sea’s design in every detail and is meticulous about boat maintenance. He was also a patient and thorough instructor. My adventures on Plan Sea involved the thrill of a fast-moving ocean boat with plenty of great fun and conversation. I look forward to future opportunities to sail along with Kevin and his crew.
