Deckhand - Temporary / Seasonal - United States

Third crew wanted — Southeast Alaska documentary leg

I'm looking for a third crew member for a cruise in Southeast Alaska aboard a 1998 53-foot expedition sailboat. Crew joins the boat in Cordova on 8/11. From there we head south, with Juneau as a tentative destination.

The purpose of this leg is to shoot a documentary as a proof of concept for the Ice Frontiers project (icefrontiers.com — worth a look for background). Since the film documents the expedition, crew need to be genuinely comfortable on camera. Ideally you can also contribute some footage — no fancy gear needed, a decent camera or phone is more than enough.

This is the next stage of a voyage that began in New Zealand in May 2026. Since then the boat has sailed nearly 7,000 nautical miles through the South Pacific and the Aleutian Islands. After this leg she'll be repositioned in British Columbia for an extensive winter refit, in preparation for another Alaska season possibly followed by the Northwest Passage.

This is a professional project on a tight timeline. We'll visit remote places, and you can expect long days and activities ashore.

Requirements

- Significant sailing experience on monohull yachts 40 ft or larger.
- Comfortable standing solo day and night watches.
- Competent with sail handling, reefing, docking, anchoring, and general seamanship.
- Able to work effectively as part of a small crew.
- Calm, safety-oriented, adaptable, and willing to contribute to all aspects of operating the boat.
- Able to meet the physical demands of remote expedition sailing with no reliable access to medical care.
- Comfortable on camera and willing to appear in a publicly released documentary.

Preferred

- Previous sailing experience in Alaska, British Columbia, or similar cold-water cruising areas.
- Photography or videography skills.

Logistics

- This is an unpaid position.
- All onboard expenses are covered.
- Travel expenses are covered.
- Given the short timeline, final crew selection may not be made until August 7, for a planned departure around August 11.
Candidates already based in the United States or Canada are preferred, since they can join on short notice.
