Watch: Intro to life on board

Deckhand - Permanent - $100-$200p.w+meals+bed+tallship training - Australia

If you've always wanted to sail in a tall ship or looking to develop your tall ship skills - this is your chance. The company SYDNEY HARBOUR TALL SHIPS has three historic sailing ships and a wooden ferry which cruise regularly on Sydney Harbour and occasionally offshore. Our job is to share the excitement and romance of tall ship sailing and the delights of Sydney Harbour and the Australian coastline with local and international visitors.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK our business is operating under limited capacity and Australia's borders are closed to International travellers for an indefinite time (possibly until June 2021) except we are now open to New Zealand. Please keep an eye on news updates regarding travel restrictions. If you are available from this time with flexibility you are welcome to apply for a position. Please state the range of dates you would be available for.

We are looking for enthusiastic young crew who love working with and serving people and are not afraid of heights, since part of the job is 'laying aloft' and furling the sails. The job is multi-faceted and every day is different - excellent customer service is paramount and a high regard for cleanliness. You will be serving food, serving at a bar, sailing the ship and doing some maintenance jobs. You have a friendly nature, are responsibly minded and enjoy the satisfaction of making people happy. Sailing experience is valued but not essential - your willingness to learn is more important. We have a well structured training programme for all crew.

Non smoking policies apply at Sydney Harbour Tall Ships.

An Australian Holiday Working Visa is usually required for foreign crew. This is not available in some countries, unfortunately, including many Eastern European countries, African countries, Indonesia and the Philippines.

You will need to be 18-30 yrs old (or in some cases up to 35 years old) to obtain the holiday/work visa.

If you're considering a maritime career or just looking for adventure and enjoy being part of a friendly community this is a great opportunity for you.

Live-aboard positions are available (with all meals provided) plus $100-$200/week (normally more than this but currently reduced due to economic downturn/reduction is tourism). Please send an application with your CV, photo and availability to Capt James Parbery.

  • Boat descriptionWe actually have four historic vessels in Sydney, including three sailing ships. All vessels are built of timber and comply to the strict safety standards required in Australia. Our two larger vessels, Southern Swan and Soren Larsen are 210 tonnes and 295 tonnes respectively. They were built in Denmark in 1922/1949. Their maximum speed is about ten knots and they can sail about 75 degrees to windward - good for broad reaching and running! The baby of our fleet, Ho-Ho II (currently named Coral Trekker) is a famous Norwegian vessel with an amazing history. She was built in 1939/49 and displaces 50 tonnes. Crew are accommodated in comfortable cabin bunks and receive three meals every day in addition to the bursary.
