Interested in Cruising
I realized recently that a decent live-aboard yacht costs as much as or less than a decent home in the area that I live. And you can... go places? On the high seas? As a captain? And now, thanks to Starlink, you can do your fancy computer job from the middle of the Atlantic, or any shabby port in some archipelago? I should be doing this.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about sailing or boat husbandry. Evidently. So before I learn everything the hard way and set my money on fire, I thought I'd crew for a bit. Here's a bit about me:
- Never sailed. I don't know if I get sea-sick, but I haven't experienced motion-sickness (car, air, etc). I enjoy speed and heights, if that indicates anything.
- I ride a motorcycle ~daily (weather accommodating, because I'm a sissy), so you could say I enjoy "managed risk".
- In okay shape. 6', 155lb. Clean bill of health.
- Raised on a small farm. I enjoy getting my hands dirty, even though I'm relatively unskilled. I work on my bike a little. I've done basic electrical work, plumbing, renovation, and small engine repair.
- I do computer programming for work, so I'm fairly good with computers and tech and stuff. I think of myself as a quick learner. I want to understand how stuff works.
- Related to that, I want to be on a boat with internet. I could pitch in to get Starlink installed, if necessary. I have no idea how much time I'd get to spend on my computer as a learning deck-hand. I'm expecting not much.
- Relatively well-traveled, albeit in groups. I've visited England, Hungary, Belgium, Czechia, Switzerland, Russia, Sudan, and Kenya. I spent half of my childhood in New Zealand.
- I'm pretty laid-back and personable. I enjoy talking to people. I also enjoy being alone. I play a little guitar.
- I only speak American. I like the idea of learning more languages, though I've never had the discipline.
