Former wildland firefighter seeking a long-term sailing adventure
Hey, I’m Nate, 21, from San Diego. I’m looking to join a smaller cruising boat ideally for at least a few weeks, ideally longer, anywhere in the world.
I have basically no sailing experience yet (sailed twice on friends sloop but quite briefly both times). I’m looking for a skipper willing to teach me, but I’m not looking to be a passenger. I want to learn the boat, handle lines, help with maintenance, cook, clean, and make myself genuinely useful.
I spent two seasons on a USFS wildland firefighting handcrew and previously worked as an EMT. I’m comfortable with long shifts, physical work, basic living conditions. I also train Muay Thai, have traveled internationally alone to Europe and Asia, and adapt well to unfamiliar places. I’m comfortable with technology and learn new systems quickly.
I can commit for 1–3 months, travel internationally, cover my flights, and contribute a fair share toward normal onboard expenses. I’m especially interested in a real cruising adventure on a smaller boat where I can become part of the crew.
I’m happy to video call, provide work references, and study any boat manuals or preparation material before joining.
