Captain/Engineer/First Mate

*** Update for April 2020: Currently in Barcelona Spain as captain on large catamaran. Hired to oversee a major refit, then sail to Greece for summer and to Caribbean for next winter. While I remain employed and living aboard, the refit and sailing program has been put on hold due to coronavirus and date for project restart remains uncertain. ***

Youthful 63 year old Canadian, healthy and fit, skilled and hard-working. Recently wound up 30 year professional consulting practice (insurance), now pursuing full time employment in yachting industry in pursuit of my passion for the sea and adventure. Have logged nearly 30,000 miles over last 10 years, approximately 80% under sail and 20% on motor yachts.

Possess superior sailing skills in all weather conditions. Especially enjoy long blue water passages. Excellent navigator and weather router. Have completed two Atlantic crossings (west to east), one South Pacific crossing including Panama, plus numerous Caribbean, and US east coast deliveries. Especially good at maneuvering yachts in close quarters and take great pride in executing tight docking maneuvers in difficult wind or current conditions.

Skilled mechanic/engineer. Can easily follow a routine maintenance program (or create a program if not already established). When problems occur underway, can quickly troubleshoot source and efficiently resolve most issues with ease. Have depth of experience with mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, navigation and communication systems.

Currently hold numerous marine and diving certifications. Will complete final requirements October 2019 for commercial Yachtmaster certificate (200T Offshore) for sail. If time permits will also complete requirements for commercial power endorsement as well.

I am an enthusiastic leader, responsible, fun and easy to be around, a team player, non-smoker, light social drinker and no drugs or tattoos. Looking for a great boat and owner for whom I will work passionately. As the saying goes ... "Do what you love and never work a day in your life!" Sailing and yacht maintenance is my passion.

May consider short term delivery or charter work, if available, but preference is for quality long term position.

Thank you for considering me as a candidate for employment.

Q: What’s your favourite boating experience? Atlantic Crossing - St Maarten to Barcelona onboard Oyster 56. Love blue water sailing best!!!

Q: What’s your worst boating experience? Dismasted 800 miles east of Bahamas aboard 68' New Horizon Ketch. In a night time squall, bow stem let go, headsail flew over mast like a kite and pulled both poles back down towards stern. Flattened dodger and fortunate there were no serious injuries. Invaluable lessons learned on how to manage catastrophic failures. Lessons also learned about sailing rigs, problem areas and what to look for to prevent such failures. I am a wiser sailor because of this - knock on wood I never experience such an accident again.
