Looking for a Navigator or Deckhand position
Good day Sir/Madam,
My name is Daniel Brown. I am a First Year Deck Cadet at the Caribbean Maritime University, an avid sailor at the Montego Bay Yacht Club and also an amateur web developer/software engineer. However my passion for the sea trumps all. This interest was bestowed upon me by my father, a Marine Engineer. Though unlike him, I was drawn more to navigation. Ship magazines, documentaries and nautical charts were a solid part of my childhood. Now I seek to turn those inspiration into a practical skill to serve me a lifetime.
I have been sailing for close to a decade, the experiences I have gathered in that time coincided in a few courses I am currently undertaking at my University; Seamanship. From Knots, Bend and Hitches to Blocks and Tackles, Flags, Helm Orders and Rigging Platform Stages and Boson chairs, Anchoring, Maintenance and the Methods of Mooring a vessel. Currently my two favorite courses are Terrestrial and Celestial Navigation.
Besides sailing on vessels ranging from J22 up to Cruisers, I have had to chance to partake in excursion involving motor vessels at my local Yacht Club in Montego Bay. Mainly for hunting marlin. It was fun, however not at fun as being tasked with taking the vessel in and out the channel and being on the helm maneuvering over the waves. My curiosity also extended into the engines. It’s fascinating to see how each part functions in relation to the others.
Approximately a year ago I took a coxswains’ license course on a 300hp 40ish foot duel outboard powerboat. The entire experience was fulfilling. It felt as if it came naturally although I messed up every now and then due to over thinking. Besides operating the boat in the form of Docking, Passing over Reefs, Anchoring and Man over Board scenarios, A great deal was placed into learning the Rules of the road, Phonetic Alphabet and using VHF radios. I did complete the course in its entirety, however I lacked the funds necessary to pay for the Maritime Authority Jamaica Exams, to get my licenses.
I despise sitting around feeling useless. I prefer to be in the middle of the action and or learning from individuals with experience. Especially now that I have learnt a set of skills with the ability to completely reshape my life.
I believe if I given the chance to partake in role of a Deckhand, it would go a long way in bolstering my competence as a future mariner/navigator.
Best Regards
Daniel Brown
