Experienced Sailboat Crew Member & Racer | Current 43’ Sailboat Owner
Hello, I am Fergus Clare from Chicago, Illinois in the United States. I’m interested in crewing for races, boat deliveries and cruising expeditions all over the world. I have completed 5,000 miles as a distance racer with 2,500 as the boat owner and person in charge. I do not smoke, I do not do any drugs and never drink while sailing; onshore, I drink with extreme moderation.
Background:
As a seasoned sailor and current J/130 (43') sailboat owner with seven years of racing experience in the Chicago area, I'm looking to leverage my extensive hands-on experience and a passion for sailing as crew. I am 45 years old, 6'-5", 210 lbs, physically fit and have extensive helming experience, yet can be put to use in any position on a sprit boat.
I have completed over 30 distance races and three Mac races (666 miles roundtrip) in the Chicago area, winning 1st to finish, 2nd in our section and 3rd overall in the 2018 season. In 2023, I completed my first Mac race as a boat owner and person in charge successfully navigating, provisioning, helming and safely completing the race with 12 people aboard, demonstrating endurance, strategic planning and leadership under challenging conditions.
I have owned three sailboats and am intimately familiar with sailboat repairs, maintenance, safety and equipment. I'm eager to contribute my skills and experience as a sailor to a competitive, team oriented boat for racing and/or competent crew for oceanic voyages. My extensive experience as a boat owner, distance racer and helmsman would make me an asset to any program. I am easy going and a pleasure to have aboard.
