Curious learner looking to build sea miles, easygoing and used to roughing it
Hi I've just joined Crewbay and I'm looking for a position as novice crew, friendship, or voluntary work. I want to learn the practical side of boat life properly, both handling and engine work, with someone patient enough to teach a beginner who genuinely cares about getting it right.
A bit about me: I'm in my early twenties, American and studying at the University of Virginia. I've spent the last few years traveling through about 24 countries, mostly by hitchhiking, public transport, and Couchsurfing, so I'm comfortable in unfamiliar places, comfortable with strangers, and not precious about hard living conditions.
I have no formal sailing or boating experience, but I'm a quick learner, I enjoy physical work, and I'm genuinely interested in mechanics and how things work. I'm low-drama, easygoing in small spaces, and happy to do the unglamorous jobs as well as the fun ones. I love long deep conversations and I'm equally happy to be quiet on watch. I love reading too.
Longer-term I'd like to build enough experience to consider an ocean crossing, but I'd much rather start small with someone who'll teach me properly than fake my way onto something I'm not ready for.
Open to most regions and reasonably flexible on timing. Happy to chat by phone or video call so we can size each other up before committing.
Looking forward to meeting some good people and learning a lot.
