Looking to Crew,on a sailing yacht from canaries or Cape Verde to Caribbean

Hi sailors, I've just joined Crewbay. I'm interested in finding a spot on a sailing yacht as crew.
Unfortunately, the skipper I was planning to sail to Suriname with later this year has decided to postpone his trip for a year. I completely understand his decision, but waiting another year is unfortunately not an option for me. So I’m now looking for another skipper and boat to join as crew for an Atlantic crossing towards Suriname or the Caribbean.

I’ve been sailing for as long as I can remember. I started as a child on the Frisian lakes in the Netherlands and over the years gradually ventured further afield, sailing on the IJsselmeer, Wadden Sea, North Sea and Baltic Sea. For the past six years I’ve also owned my own 32-foot sailing yacht, which I sail frequently, particularly on the Wadden Sea and around the Dutch Wadden Islands.

So I’m certainly not new to sailing, but there is still one important experience missing: I have never crossed an ocean. And that is exactly the experience I’m looking for now. I’m not looking for a luxury cruise; quite the opposite. I want to be part of a small crew, stand my watches, help with checks, cooking and maintenance, and share responsibility for whatever needs to be done along the way.

My original plan was to head to the Canary Islands at the end of October, sail from there to Cape Verde and then cross the Atlantic towards Suriname. My schedule is reasonably flexible, and I’m also open to other routes towards the Caribbean.

Of course, I’m more than happy to contribute my fair share towards the costs of the passage, including food, fuel, marina fees and other shared expenses.

For me, the most important thing is finding the right boat and an experienced skipper, with a crew where there is a good personal connection and mutual trust.

If you are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and reliable crew member or if you know someone who is crossing the Atlantic this autumn and still has a place available, I would be very happy to hear from you.

A phone or video call to get to know each other and see whether it feels like a good match on both sides would be a great first step.

Fair winds,

Bas van Sprang
