Deckhand - Temporary / Seasonal - France

We are seeking deckhands with a strong interest in media, photography, filmmaking, or writing to help document the spring 2026 preparation and sea trials of a custom aluminum expedition yacht ahead of a planned voyage to Svalbard in summer 2026. This is a volunteer, non-commercial position suited to emerging storytellers who want practical expedition experience and the opportunity to create meaningful work in a high-latitude context.

Safety, professionalism, and clear communication are core values on board. English is the working language for all operational matters, though basic conversational proficiency is sufficient. French is helpful during the refit period in Brest, but not essential.

We will conduct several rounds of sea trials, from day outings to week-long cruises. Storyteller crews are not expected to join every trial; participants will be contacted ahead of each outing to confirm availability.

The role combines light deck duties with media work. Tasks may include photographing or filming refit progress, capturing daily life during sea trials, recording interviews, and helping reflect the Ice Frontiers mission through documentary-style content. This is not a leisure cruise—we are looking for reliable, collaborative people who are comfortable working in outdoor, dynamic environments.

Media rights and creative ownership:
All photos, videos, audio, and written materials produced during the project become part of the Ice Frontiers media archive, ensuring a unified narrative and consistent editorial control. Volunteers may use selected excerpts of their own work in a personal portfolio or showreel, with proper credit. Independent publication or distribution is not permitted without prior agreement.

What’s in it for you:
This role offers hands-on experience with an active expedition project as it moves from refit to sea trials. You will gain access to a unique creative environment, build portfolio material rooted in real expedition preparation, and participate in shaping the early documentary record of Ice Frontiers. Volunteers may request portfolio credit, professional references, or logbook verification.
Strong contributors may be considered for future Ice Frontiers expeditions and storytelling projects.

Applicants are encouraged to research the Ice Frontiers project. Our newsletter provides the most current overview of the mission, current progress, and long-term objectives.
