Looking for a Captain, Friendship, Mile building or 1st Mate position
Hi - I've just joined Crewbay and I’m hopng to meet new people and sail to new places.
I'm a youthful 61 years and at a stage in life where I’ve been able get back into sailing. I’ve had wide experience of sailing already, but mostly in my teens and twenties, of crewing in family-owned yachts up to 36 foot along the English and French coasts, and in the Mediterranean (Aegean and Adriatic), plus a Tall Ships Race across the North Sea when I was 16. Since resuming the hobby in 2019 I’ve completed my RYA Coastal Skipper, and I’ve sailed around the Baltic Sea, across the English Channel, plus this year I skippered a charter in Turkey.
I’ve been married 28 years and we have 3 grown-up children. I’m currently self-employed as a gardener plus Airbnb host, so I can be flexible about dates. My background is both practical and academic. From 1999 I had a 25-year stint as a Physics (+ Biology, Maths and Spanish) teacher, in various secondary schools across England. I came to that late, though, after a varied career involving hands-on work first as a cycle mechanic, and later as a builder and carpenter (I’m a qualified joiner), and in between those working in London as a software developer, and in Spain teaching English.
As a person I am relaxed and easy going. I tend to see the best in people and I like good food, good wine, good company, and not to take things too seriously. I also like keeping fit, reading classic literature, and following current affairs.
As a sailor I am happy to use the latest technology with Navionics and furler gibs etc, but my background is in doing things the old-fashioned way with paper charts, compass and dead reckoning, and that’s where I’m most comfortable. I’m hoping to put miles into my logbook with a view to taking the RYA Yachtmaster, but I’m not in any rush - what I’m mainly after is a fun sailing experience.
I hope my profile reads well. I’m financially solvent so I’m happy to pay my own way. A trip in tidal waters off the coast of Europe is what I’m imagining, but something in the Med or something further afield (trans-Atlantic? Latin America? My Spanish is rusty but once I warm up, it is fluent) is also on my bucket list.
