Beginner–Intermediate Sailor Looking to Gain Sea Time & Contribute
Hi, I’m Max — welcome to my profile.
Before I bore you with my résumé or origin story, I just want to share the reason I’m here: a desire to meet people, help out, and chase adventure. Ten years ago, the first time I ever sailed, I made myself a simple promise: “Make this a central part of your life, somehow.” I’m finally honouring that promise.
I’m a beginner-to-intermediate sailor looking to gain more experience on different boats and learn from people with more sea miles. I hold the CYA Basic Cruising Standard (2023) and recently completed my STCW Basic Safety, STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boat), Marine First Aid, Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC-MC), and I currently hold a valid Marine Medical Certificate.
I own a C&C 32 racer/cruiser in Victoria, which I maintain, sail, and live aboard. Even with that experience, I still consider myself early in the journey and very motivated to keep learning. I’m comfortable with the basics: line handling, helming, sail trim, anchoring, and keeping watches.
Before transitioning to life on the water, I spent close to a decade leading wildland firefighting operations in British Columbia, followed by a year as a humanitarian logistician in Central Africa with Doctors Without Borders (MSF). When I returned from Africa in November 2024, I decided to fully commit to my sailing ambitions. I sold my house in the Rockies, moved aboard my boat Halcyon in June 2025, and since then have focused on maintaining, upgrading, sailing, and learning as much as I can.
I’m handy with tools, happy to help with general maintenance, and I enjoy cooking — I have nearly ten years of experience in restaurants and tourism. I’m also a scuba diver/free diver and very comfortable in the water.
What I’m looking for
I’m open to any opportunities to crew, join passages, island-hop, or simply help out on a boat where I can learn and contribute as part of a team. I’ve arranged my life and finances so I can accept most reasonable opportunities.
Availability
Flexible, If you think I could be a good fit aboard, feel free to reach out. I’m friendly, easygoing, respectful, and genuinely motivated to improve my seamanship.
