If you’re looking for crew for an exciting voyage or delivery (2-4 weeks max) at some point, please get in touch. I did the Global Challenge 2004-05 (the whole route) but obviously that is a long time ago. I have been sailing for fun ever since, on an ad hoc basis. I have my Day Skipper but it was ages ago.
Very specifically I am currently thinking of my gap in work being between 15th November and 5 December. Friends have suggested I look at Asia/Pacific. Ideally I have to be back in the UK for something on 5th December but that is not a deal breaker. However, I cannot leave the UK before the 15th November as I have a public engagement on the 13th November (which scares me more than 50ft waves). Could also possibly do later in the season/Christmas with enough planning.
If there is an opportunity to do anything linked with marine conservation, or to learn to dive along the way, then that would be a lovely bonus.
I am good at PR/writing/documenting so could be of use in that department.
Sailing adventures full of laughter and decent, honest vibes is what I would like to find. I think I might like to do another circumnavigation in a few years’ time (not quite yet though as I have not terribly well parents and a wonderful dog who is half of my heart) so it would be good to build my networks.
I am extremely interested in nautical history. I love wooden boats and am a passionate gig rower.
Other stuff: I very much like and have spent a lot of time in (Arctic) Norway in a previous life. I also love Ireland and Canada. Places on my sailing wish list include Nantucket and that area, to revisit Boston (which I loved), Newfoundland, Asia, NZ, some of the Pacific, Corfu, and more.
I have 30,000 miles on my log book. I’m still actively into sailing (a few times a year) and crew on my friend’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 out of Fareham. We’ve just sailed to Guernsey in a three-girl crew which was a hoot. We may do some more stuff next year on longer distances but she has just broken her arm hence I am looking on my own at the moment.
I’m competent (but not expert!), laid back, direct, a good team player and bright, with a good dry, very Britishly dark sense of humour. I’m not a yachtmaster, only day skipper (and that was some time ago). But I’m a quick learner, a hard worker and I’m used to being offshore. I’ve done passages of 6 weeks or so and loved it.
My weak points - please read
1. I am not scared of rough weather but I am no good at bouncing around forward of the mast in a big blow as my balance/confidence about my balance is a bit compromised following some heavy-duty neuro surgery in 2013. That is history, but I do know my limits - stormy foredeck work is not possible for me and sailing friends need to know this so that I don't feel embarassed. Jumping off boats with a big freeboard like a gazelle is now also history for the same reasons.
