Tomkai ~ Deckhand, bosun or technician position

My name is Tom, I’ve been sailing for the best part of my life and the last 6 years have been aboard Tall ships my roles being deckhand, bosun and mate. I have been sailing mostly in the United Kingdom and Europe but more recently Australia. I am a very practical person with a wide number of general skills I
have no problem tackling any task given to me whether it’s fitting a brand-new main engine, helming a 140ft square rigger, watch leading in the Tall ships race or cooking a 3-course meal for 20 guests and pouring some pints. I have a very outgoing bubbly personality with strong character, great with guests and families in a hospitality situation.

I’ve been fortunate to be a part of multiple Tallship refits gaining traditional and modern trade skills every vessel needs. My most recent and current venture has been with Sydney Harbor Tall ships as a lead deckhand, Engineer and mate all in one where I’m needed, doing day sails and charters, offshore trips such as the Sydney to Hobart and having the privilege being one of the main hands fitting and restoring the Brigantine Soren Larsen’s brand-new Main engine. While undergoing maintenance tasks
to keep the ships sailing and looking their best. In August 2023 we took Soren to Brisbane for a 6-week
period on the hardstand where I was put to the test successfully removing the rudder, steering
hydraulics, prop shaft and variable pitch system for survey. Sandblasting, cleaning and repainting them all to reinstall myself.

Sadly, my Australian visa is coming to an end with no options to renew it until later next year, so I am looking to make myself apart of another Tallship/yacht family or team elsewhere for the time being. I am looking to build on my miles and experience to hopefully broaden my qualifications and progress my career to be more official in my positions.

I take great pride in every vessel I work on and the lifelong friendships and memories I make on them and plan one day to skipper my own hopefully I can make yours part of my journey too.
