Motivated and enthusiastic beginner, determined to be valuable crew and enjoyable company (UK,Europe,&Atlantic crossing)
I am looking for sailing opportunities within the UK until November, then an Atlantic crossing afterwards, from anywhere in Europe.
I am enrolled in an RYA Competent Crew course and am excited to sail as soon as I can. I am currently an 'enthusiastic beginner, willing to learn' as many skippers' adverts are open to - I wholeheartedly appreciate those who teach me, and show that through my hard work in practicing and learning.
I am 25, from London with family connections to Brazil and Portugal. I am curious and interested in most things I don't know. I studied Physics and now work at a particle accelerator, where I design and perform experiments, verify and evaluate measurements, and, together with engineers, design and assemble equipment. Besides work and travel I usually do a lot of sport (football, wild swimming, kayaking, cycling, hiking) watch live performance as much as I can, read, and commit plenty of time to friends and family. For creative outlet I put on homemade radio shows, designed an escape room, and am learning some crafts - but still have a long way to go. I have done some amateur astronomy and studied some astrophysics so may be able to offer some interesting conversation about the night sky!
I have plenty to talk about, aim to give the best of myself, respect other people, their property and space. On your boat I will contribute as much as I can to running the boat, learn as much as I can on whatever you're willing to teach, adapt to the rules on your boat, and offer enjoyable company.
Motivation for sailing:
Contact with nature, and adventures outside my comfort zone are exactly what my current 9-5 lifestyle is lacking and what sailing provides by having to work with and adapt to the weather, stripping away typical support networks, and taking care with limited resources on board.
Until now, my travelling has mostly been fairly conventional, and my favourite holidays have been the most adventurous 'self-propelled' ones. Now I have made time to do something new, sailing is the obvious choice.
I am leaving my job for a year to try another way of living and am determined that sailing will be a part of that.
What I am looking for:
A friendly skipper willing to teach a little, who is looking for somebody to help run the boat, and for enjoyable company on the journey.
Local sailing in the UK until the end of October, and an Atlantic crossing from then on, potentially as part of ARC. Whether the atlantic crossing finishes in the carribean, south/central america, stops through cape verde or the west coast of Africa is not as important. I am happy joining a boat travelling across as quickly as possible as I am on one stopping all along the way.
I am serious about learning to sail and see it as part of my future lifestyle. I am not just looking for a free ride.
I will not leave you in azores or canaries unless you want me to (I hear this is a common problem)
I handle emergency situations well, and keep optimistic under pressure
I have had adventures on land, wild camping in (sea) kayaking and cycling trips - which required awareness and respect for nature.
I realise the need to get to know the skipper and other crew, and make preparations before a big trip and I expect to put in work to do so.
If this post appears naive in some way but otherwise sounds good to you, contact me so I can build an awareness of what's required and account for it.
I look forward to hearing from you!
