Semi retired commercial Deckhand looking to ship out, under sail or power to continue learning and meet people
Living the retired life in Mexico Yucatan peninsula, I love the beach but want to stay active while learning how to sail with safe , knowledgeable sailors that don't take themselves too seriously except when it’s called for.
My strong preference is for ocean crossings, or circumnavigation, in order to gain serious, hands-on experience at being part of the crew. However, I am also open to the possibility of coastal cruising. I am willing to start with a short-term, probationary period of a few weeks, and then, if we are mutually compatible, we can negotiate a longer-term commitment. I am willing to travel far away, in order to board the boat, if we seem like a good fit, and our goals match.
I am not completely green, as I have one month of experience, meandering from port to port, in Brittany, on a sailboat, and a good sense of the wind, as I spent my childhood windsurfing on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. I also work regularly as a commercial deckhand on commercial bulk freighter, Coast Guard Ice Breakers, and crew boat. I have experience on large cruise ship in the Caribbean for a month, many years ago, and spent three seasons working as a deckhand on a scuba diving boat on the French Riviera, and in Morocco. I am an experienced scuba diver / instructor, with over 500 dives (CMAS certified).
In addition to regular deckhand and bridge-watching duties, I can also do cleaning, cook a bit, and help with ships’ maintenance, and various chores and tasks onboard. I am a qualified oxy acetylene welder, pilot, and scuba diver, and I am not afraid of hard work, or of getting my hands dirty.
I live a fit and healthy lifestyle. I am almost vegan, but I am not the type of person to impose my own lifestyle choices on others. I still enjoy good wine and beers. I love animals, especially dogs, and I care deeply about the environment - I could spend hours cleaning beaches, and fighting against plastic pollution. I am pretty much a minimalist. I travel light and I’m happy with the basic necessities.
I am far more interested in people and experiences, than in material things and outward appearances. I get along well with humble and patient people. No giant egos please, and no drama - I just want to cruise, make friends, and enjoy life, intelligently, while discovering new places and cultures. I am well-traveled, tolerant, and respectful, and asking the same. I am personable, optimistic, cheerful, a good listener, and very eager to learn. I am fun, easygoing, and adventurous. I am very neat and clean. I have no tattoos or piercings and I am a non smoker.
