Seeking hands-on sailing experience, to learn fast, contribute fully aboard, and build skills for future long ocean pass

Hi, I’m Kevin from Toronto, Canada, and I’m currently between careers and eager to spend a few weeks properly learning how to sail. Although I grew up inland, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean. I spent three months in Oahu surfing with locals, I am AIDA 2 freediving certified and PADI scuba certified, and I would love to learn more fishing and spearfishing along the way.

My long term dream is to build the skills and experience needed for serious ocean passages, including one day crossing the Pacific and exploring remote surf focused corners of the world. My interest in sailing really took hold after my parents sold their house during COVID to purchase a sailboat and taught themselves while cruising the Mediterranean. I joined them during holidays and absolutely loved the rhythm of life aboard, the teamwork required, and the feeling of being completely at sea.

While I do not yet have extensive sailing experience myself, I am a quick learner, comfortable working hard, and eager to contribute in any way possible while building real seamanship. I studied business and math at university while playing varsity football on scholarship, and working as a barista at a neighborhood café (which remains one of my favorite jobs because I loved running the floor, connecting with people, and making latte art!). After graduating, I spent two and a half years in investment banking, an environment defined by relentless schedules, late nights that regularly ran past midnight, weekend work, and constant pressure to perform at a high level. I recently stepped away from finance to move into an operating role in the modular construction and equipment rental industry, and before starting I am taking time to pursue experiences that have been on my list for years.

I am adventurous, optimistic, quick to learn, and happy to take on any task that helps the boat and crew run smoothly, whether that means standing watch, scrubbing decks, cooking, or hauling lines. I get along easily with people from all backgrounds and would love to leave any sailing experience not only with stronger seamanship, but also with lifelong friendships. I am also a longtime fan of Survivor and made it through two rounds of casting interviews, which reflects my enjoyment of teamwork, resilience, and unpredictable environments, all qualities that translate naturally to life at sea.
