Watch: Sailing Ioanian

Looking to meet new sailing friends

I am now living aboard my boat full-time and looking to meet new sailing friends around my own age (36) who'd like to join me. I'm not looking to host people wanting a free holiday but for people who want to try giving this lifestyle a go longer term. This means we won't be looking to change town/anchorage every evening like on a charter trip but instead cruising at a slower pace. It also means everyone will be expected to chip in and get involved with any daily tasks/chores. I'm not worried about how much sailing experience as I'm happy to teach.

Initial plans are to stay in the Ionian. Eventually I want to sail around the world but I'm in no rush to start that journey. Sailing in the Ionian is the perfect place to learn and get to know the boat. The Ionian is generally easy sailing with a huge amount of beautiful towns and anchorages to visit. You can see examples of the sailing and locations on my instagram @ryanjuk

With respect to costs, I like to be upfront. You will pay for your own costs (travel/transport/food/drink etc). Everything else will be shared between crew. On top of that, if crew want to eat out on an evening, they pay for my meal + 1 drink, which on average is 15 euro. As I'm a liveaboard, if I was to eat out every night crew were onboard I'd quickly run out of cash, same as if you were ordering takeaway every night at home.

Apologies but I don't currently accept couples as it can bring unknown dynamics onboard. This may change in future once I have a bigger boat/crew.

Below is an example of some prices:

Anchorage: Free
Average town quay: 10eur/night
Average meal: 10eur
6 Pack of 2L Water: 2eur
Average beer: 4eur
Glass of wine: 4eur

If you're interested in what you just read get in touch and lets have a chat :).

  • Boat descriptionThe boat comfortably sleeps 4 people (two double beds) but is rated up to 6. She's really easy to handle with all lines leading back to the cockpit and much more spacious than older boats of her size. She has been upgraded with an electric toilet, 20kg rocna anchor (oversized) & solar panels (300W) making her close to self sustainable other than having to fill up on water every now and then. Awesome guy

Ryan is the most patient and kindest man. I purchased my boat in Croatia, and Ryan assisted me in getting the boat to Corfu. He taught me everything he knew in just two weeks, and from there, I sailed solo. Due to his profession, Ryan is extremely proficient with onboard navigation systems, explaining and configuring them in a way that even a novice like myself can understand. He helped me last November, and we still maintain contact to this day. If you're hesitant about having Ryan on board, it's really unnecessary; he's a very competent young man. Ryan, thanks again buddy!

2 Weeks, Welcomed New Crew, Amazing Skipper

Ryan is great. I definitely recommend sailing with him! He has a lot of experience, patience, and communicates really well (jokes aside about his British accent, he really does take his time to explain things). I have never really been sailing for so long (on a boat here and there, but never actually helping as part of a team). I was actually a bit nervous because other skippers I've been around have been a tad bit crazy, but Ryan really is an amazing teacher. I was completely new to sailing - I didn't even know which side of the boat was which and I know that could be frustrating for a lot seasoned sailors, but Ryan accepted the challenge and happily taught me as much as my brain could absorb. There were some situations where Ryan really proved to be an expert skipper, keeping his cool, having complete control of the sailboat the entire time, and able to delegate what to do without shouting or being condescending (I'm pointing this out because this has been my experience before with others, but not with Ryan - he's really calm and respectful, always). There were three of us onboard and I couldn't have asked for a better team. I think it was really awesome that Ryan was able to share his space with complete strangers and get along with us so well for so long (two weeks) - honestly, not many people are capable of doing that. I really hope to sail again one day with Ryan! =)

A week of sailing at the Ionian sea with an experienced skipper

I am a skipper with sailing passion and had the goal to meet fun people with similar interests. I met Ryan on crewbay and when we first had a phone call my first impression about him was chill, fun, clever guy with indeed sailing know-how. All have been indeed verified during our trip and I saw even more good traits. I see myself as somewhat experienced sailor (not ocean-sailing, usually Mediterranean) however still I learnt a couple of new tricks from Ryan. He is very experienced sailor, he knows his boat very well. Moreover he is a very positive and kind guy, we basically laughed from start till end having great time. We were 3 people on boat, all different countries with different backgrounds. He is a very nice fella, say you land on a particular bar - people remember him with a smile and hug. Also he is a relaxed captain. During times of trouble, best is not to panic and simply decide on what to do fast and correct followed by applying that with crew. He is on top of his game on this. Always calm. This seems like a simple captain trait but usually captains fail at this. I heavily recommend hanging out with Ryan and "Sailing Bella" (boat) to everyone.
